Default Version 5 STi 5 speed swap

Anyone know if a V5 (1999) Sti (444) close ratio 5 speeder will boly up to a 2002 WRX? Can't seem to find anything on the suitability of this box in this forum.

yep. I've got one in my car. Great acceleration at any speed and highway cruising revs are high enough that you dont really need to downshift to pass people.

Kinda, one of these days I'm going to write up a full evaluation of the new gearbox and ratios. Cruising mileage is nonexistant now since 75mph is right at 3500 rpm in 5th. I do a lot of city driving and the short 1st gear means that I have to wind it out higher to get moving (I normally shift out of 1st at 4000 or 4500, 3500rpm for each other gear).

I've got the usual boltons, bigger turbo, big top mount, ecutek, and I get anywhere between 260 and 300 miles per tank. Not far off from a typical stage 4 car.

WOW. That sounds encouraging. Did you need to change anything like diff ratio or did you do just a straight bolt up job?

What is the strength of that transmission compared to stock?

You need a 4.44 rear diff. I think my second goes up to 72mph at 8k rpm's. My theoretical topspeed is about 185ish at 8k.

I was told that the 1-3 gears are wider and stronger. If nothing else the added mechanical advantage of the 4.44 lessens the stress on the transmission.

There is a gear ratio/speed calculator in the sticky at the top of this forum, plug in the gear ratios and see what kinda speeds it will get. I really feel like I need a higher rev limit with these gears since 2nd doesnt even get to 60mph (8K redline would haul).
