Exclamation Subaru's New FB Turbo Motor (1.6 DIT)

Grimmspeed noticed this in some of the BRZ photos, I completely missed it!

Sadly, thats all I can find right now... Looking for more info and better photos ASAP!

Its on display right now at the Tokyo auto show.

Update: More photos courtesy Hachiroku on the FT86 forums!

Sadly, no information about the model designation or the specs

The diesel?

Edit, NVM. I think I see spark plug coils. Unless those are glow plugs...?

This is really good news and offers the possibility of packing a turbo motor into the tighter BRZ's engine bay. Who knows, maybe even a variant of it might make it into the car some day.

This motor isn't for the BRZ. Its the new WRX/STI engine.

Plastic disapates heat better (the point of an intercooler) and it keeps production costs down (cheaper MSRP for us). If you turn up boost enough to blow the plastic sides, then you were going to upgrade anyway.

This correlates with the event last week where there was a slide that said the new WRX was going to get a turbo 2.0 FB engine.

Is that just for the US? If Subaru is planning a return to WRC don't they have to have a 1.6 liter engine?

If they put this into the XV, then I know what my next car will be.

Subaru only needs 2500 cars to have a 1.6L Turbo to be WRC/FIA eligible. So a short-run, STI Spec C (maybe Type RA), would suffice. They already have the motor since the just released Advanced Tourer Concept has a 1.6L Hybrid engine. Just remove the hybrid motor and you have your WRC engine (in it's weakest form).

The FB20T could then be sold in all of the other models, similar how the EJ25T is only sold on certain models.

Given some of the craptastic fitment of the aftermarket leggy intercoolers we've seen I'd say keep this one that actually fits for as long as possible.

when I saw craptastic I mean REALLY craptastic.

um I don't think they would relocate the oil filter... that's no FB.

ah here we go... it is the 1.6L turbo

Next-Generation Power Unit System
-Downsized direct fuel injection turbo engine -
***12539;The downsized direct fuel injection turbo engine is one of the principal technologies that will guide Subaru's engine strategy in the future. Not only is acceleration quick and smooth with the new-generation Horizontally-Opposed engine, it is environmentally friendly. The direct fuel injection system which injects necessary amounts of fuel into the cylinders at appropriate moments, and a turbo system which efficiently supplies large amounts of air into the cylinders, along with the downsizing of current turbo engine displacements(2,500cc and 2,000cc)to 1,600cc drastically improve combustion efficiency at practical driving-speed range compared to the existing turbo engine.

Now, is it an EJ, FB or FA? Since it says Net-Generation, it should be an FB or FA.

More pics please!

A picture of the front of the engine would be helpful or even the other side. It's hard to see all the plumbing from that side.\

EDIT: Ah crap you do have the other side. I missed that sry.

What looks like a low mounted filter could also be a turbine outlet.

It looks like there is a curved heatshield on one side of it. What could be a wastegate actuator on the otherside. And I see some bolts on either side that might be "downpipe" bolts.

Edit....It also looks like it could be the MAF on the compressor inlet. I think I see a "MAF electrical box" on the side of it.

I'm pretty sure it was WingsofWar who noticed it first actually.

If they use a 2.0L instead of the 1.6L for US market vehicles, call me surprised. NOT.

Factory Freak....jk. Between a 2005 Outback 2.5XT, 2008 WRX Hatch, 2008 WRX Sedan and now a 2011 WRX Sedan, all totalling over 100,000 miles I have never had any seperation.

It makes me think a FMIC would be a lot easier to pipe with the turbo down there.

I need to google 2010+ LGT FMICs.

Plastic disspiates heat better than what?

They make heatsinks out of aluminum, copper or even steel for a reason. The thermal conductivity of plastic is way below metal.
