But you said it was a dumb idea.....

Like every other time you post this crap, I said taking the snorkel type thing that the car comes with off does nothing. I never went back on that statement. Now would you stop commenting that every time I bring up the WAI?

What worked for me is smacking the wheel with the winter tire that was going to replace it. Didn't have to on my Impreza but did on my mom's Hyundai. Mallet, steel toe and donkey kicking it didn't budge it

So this is probably a noob/dumb question, but: When putting on my winter tires today, is it safe enough to jack up one side at a time with my floor jack (not the subie one), remove all season, put on winter tire? Or should I put the jack stand as a safety measure as well for each side? I plan on just doing 1 wheel at a time...

Angelus, that's fine since you're not getting under the car. Just make sure the handbrake is on.

The last time i swapped mine i used both my floor jacks and just raised one entire side at a time. You can get to the "frame" easy enough.

Normally i use jack stands, and i did the day prior, then i realized i had put them on the same corner as last year. Took about 5 min per side with the 2 jacks

^Thanks, I'll try to use the jack stands too just to be safe. My floor jack is such a pain in the ass (harbor freight), it doesn't go high enough to easily get the car on the stands to take the wheels off

Hah! I probably have the same one. The wheels BARELY make it off the ground.

Was going to return it, decided not to... THEN finally decided I would but realized I threw out the box already. Damn.

It's just annoying, because it should do so automatically, and I wonder if there is a setting I'm missing to make that work. This head unit is basically crap anyway so it won't take much to make me toss it and get a new one.
You have to use the steering wheel controls to make it work. I recently purchased an xperia Z3 and took weeks trying to figure out how to do it. One way is to push the speak button then setup and bluetooth setup, you should be able to figure it out from there. Using the headunit won't work for some reason.

I just had my winters stationed right next to the car, so the amount of time the wheel was off the car was minimal. Jack stands weren't used in my case. Just make certain your jack is on firm level ground, the wheels are chocked, and you don't get under the car.

You can also slide the summer wheel and tire under the frame of car as well, you may have to jack the car up a little higher to do it.

New subaru in the family, '14 XV limited. Nice to have a car with mostly the same build so I can transfer any knowledge pretty much directly.

This is exactly how I swap between my summer and winter tires--I do one corner of the car at a time, using the hydraulic jack and no jack stands, and I don't get under the car. I only lift the car high enough to get the wheel I'm working on 1 or 2 inches off the ground.

If, however, I'm doing a job that requires getting all four tires off the ground at the same time (like a tire rotation, or flushing my brake fluid), or if I'm going to get under the car for any reason, then I absolutely use jack stands, and I lift the car higher into the air.

Thats what I ended up doing last night, just the floor jack. I did have the stands underneath just in care somehow the jack gave, but overall it was pretty easy and safe. Luckily I have access to a garage now so that made it a lot easier. Bring on the snow today!

Also, I'm probably done on my stockers for next year, and there's a pretty big difference in the tread between the inner and outer portion of the tire. I've rotated them all at 7500 miles, I remember others talking about how bad the stock alignment was (camber etc). Hopefully I can get this corrected when I get new tires next spring.

Looks exactly like the Harbor Frieght Tools one. Probably the same manufacturer, even the box looks similar.

Heads up to my fellow roof rack nerds, just got a new range of matte black crossbars in recently for ski season. Some prototype stuff. pix for the interested:
(may have to blow the pictures up, taken w/ my phone)

Front bar is a brand called RockyMounts based out of colorado, rear bar is the new(!) Thule aeroblade black bar.

front is thule standard square, rear is Yakima standard round (my preferred on obp cars-looks awesome with a wind deflector too)

side view of thule black aeroblades. Glare makes the color a little bright, but it really is a pretty deep matte grey. Also gives a good idea of tower height with the thule tower (450r tower in this case)

The rails on these cars taper towards the back, which kind of sucks for the thule faithful as this is the smallest bar you can fit on there (believe me, I tried). Next year thule is coming out with a black aeroblade "edge" bar, that looks a lot more like the OEM crossbars.

bring the snow
