I wish that front end made it to the GTi instead of the MKVII gills/slats.

Gladly, two things really. High pressure fuel pump failures and intercooler condensation causing engine hydro-lock.

The former affected a handful of TDI's in the states up to '12 and was due to either crappy US fuel, fuel pump quality issues or a combo of both.

The latter can affect any TDI up to '12 in the right conditions - around freezing but still wet. So mainly in the north. Last year, conditions were ripe all winter due to how extremely mild it was. Anyhow, frost forms in the intake tubing after enough moisture accumulates in the IC. You park, the frost melts such that it can flow into the engine. Crank, start, GLUNK, stall: locked. This is all due to US specific emissions modifications. Something about an extra EGR loop puking into the intake.

I've only had the hydrolock problem and it's fixed now - no bent rods. But I'm worried about the long term effects that the water chugging may have set in motion within my $11,000 engine (that's how much the bill is when you have a HPFP failure, or hydrolock explosion. Usually covered by VW.)

Wow. This is so amazingly good. Therefore it will so, so never ever ever come to the US ever ever. Or it will, and DSG only.

You are not going to believe this, but I would buy that with a DSG!

In fact I would prefer it. It would be the perfect family hauler. DSG is welcome.

That would look good next to my golf R. I am sure they would both find a way to burn down my house if put that close together... HAHAAH

Thanks a lot for the info. I am shocked that HPFP failure would incur that kind of cost. That's a real shame on an otherwise fantastic little engine.

This is exactly what I want.

We just bought a 2013 Jetta Sportwagen TDI - most my wife's car. I will gladly take one of these for my own!

It sure does look nice. I'd be more interested in a stripper model with a stick. Could be interesting if we do get rid of the 2.5 and get the 1.8 TSI or whatever people are saying everyone else is going to get. VW's always have some tuning capability, could be a nice cheap cruiser.

My idea is if the WRX ends up being practical enough, I'd have that and I could get this bad boy in DSG for the wife. She's just not coming around to driving stick.

We could use the VW for any long trips and it wouldn't suck! She's pretty set on getting back into a Mazda next, so it might be a hard sell. If the 6 wagon were coming we'd have a genuinely hard decision to make.

+1 ... though the 6MT would be tempting, too. It would be my first VW in 12 years. Never thought that would happen.

<<--has over 300k miles on previous VWs.
