Another succsessful install. Thanks for all the useful info here it really helped.

For an 05 cluster into an 02 wrx:

Clip the C9 (buzzer) and B28 (radio fuse wire)
-C9 = orange wire with white trace
-B28 = yellow wire with green trace
Dremmel off the two right hand runners on the left connector so it will fit into the gauge cluster.
Turn on the car.

East as 1,2,3. One thing this thread didn't mention (at least that I saw and I read a lot of it) was that the connectors on the STi cluster are upside down as compared to the wrx one, or at least that was true for the 05 in my 02. Not a problem, just an oddity.

Again, thank you for sharing the knowledge, I hope this post helps someone else who is too lazy to read the entire thread

Default 04 STI Cluster for my 02 WRX

Ok, I can spend DAYS reading all the responses on this thread, so I figured I would see what people have to say.
I am looking to put an STI cluster in my 02 WRX. I have heard from several places that the 04 STI cluster is the best way to go. are the connectors just plug and play or do they need modifying? Also, Ive been told that I will need to cut a wire..b29? Which one is this? Also, anybody with pix?! It would definitely be helpful!
Thanx!

Its b28 and a guy just posted the color scheme of the wire a few posts up.. theres a few diagrams on here that show you the pin location.

theres 3 plugs into the cluster A, B, & C

looking at the cluster while sitting in the drivers seat.. the plugs are A,B,C from left to right so A is left.. B is middle.. and C is the right one

as stated above C9 is the orange wire with white stripe on the right plug . B28 is the yellow wire with green stripe on the middle plug

'04 STi cluster, you don't need to mod the A connector (female) on the cluster because it's a direct fit. any other year sti cluster '05-'07 you need to modify the 2 grooves in the A plug (female) on the cluster because they're too narrow to fit your OEM WRX male connector

also.. if you dont get it by now.. when you say "C9" for example.. C refers to the plug location and the number 9 in this case is the number of the pin in that connector on the cluster. when you pull the cluster out i believe it has numbers listed on it. i forget

Does anyone know what page the wire diagram for the STI cluster is on? I'll be searching this thread for days looking for it. I'm looking for the 04 STI cluster diagram actually.

If anybody wants to know how to change kph to mph on their v7 STi cluster with the resistor mod, I posted a How to in the electrical forum, I don't want to cross post the link but just a heads up!

Its very easy if you know how to solder!

Finally recieved my OAT sensor and followed CoolRex's instructions on how to install the OAT sensor to the gauge and it worked for me. I have the 04 sti gauge cluster.. I taped up rear diff temp and dccd so it won't illuminate.

You need to have the balls to splice, solder and mess with the wiring harness to install the OAT sensor. Be very careful and look @ the schematics and read instructions very carefully. I'm also getting a sticker from the dealership to state that I have my gauge cluster replaced and with it is the mileage. Its only a $1 from the dealership.

Hi I just swapped an 05 STi cluster into my bigeye and the temp readout is being odd. I knew it was not going to work, but the number is not stating at 43 as expected. It actually seems to be changing according to the outside temp. On cold mornings it reads 30-40 degrees and today, being by far the hottest day since the install, it's 47. No big deal, just wondering if anyone else has seen this or knows what's up.

hey guys i am putting a 05 cluster into my 04 wrx. i know i have to "trim" the C one. but i was wondering what ways to trim it? what have you guys done to trim it? i also was curious i was looking at the C female side and it doesnt look as wide as the side attached to the cluster. is that normal?

^ trim the A side not the C side

as i explained earlier... the A side is the left most plug . basically the STi cluster has 2 more pins than the WRX cluster so the male portion doesnt fit onto those 2 pins.. but the 2 grooves on the STi cluster are meant to fit the STi male connector. So to compensate.. you have to extend those 2 grooves in the STi cluster to avoid connecting the extra 2 pins and so that the WRX male connector fits into the STi female plug.

it sounds more complicated than it is.. ill have to see if i still have the pics for reference

and to extend the groove.. i just went at it with a soldering iron.. just be VERY CAREFUL.. bc it melts the plastic really fast.

Can't the dealership reflash the mileage provided you bring them the old one too?

so what your saying is that you have to make the grooves in the sti cluster bigger so that the wrx end of them fit in the sti cluster?

u have to like extend them so that the male wrx clip slides into them.. they're too far to the left .. i didnt get it at first.. but when u take out the WRX cluster and compare it to the STi cluster.. you'll see what im talking about

pic i found from when i modded it. dont mind the shabby job. it worked and thats all that matters =p

alright i got my 2005 sti cluster in my 04 wrx and got the loud continous beeping/buzzing sound. i know you have to clip wire c9 for that, but in a couple posts people have said they clipped it and grounded it and others just say clip c9. my question is do you have to ground it or is clipping it good enough?

I trimmed the runners off of the WRX connector and it slid right in. The little clip in the center holds it firm, so it has no issue holding its position. I used a dremmel to trim them up. Melting out the runners on the cluster seems a bit sketchier to me...
