Default Stop complaining about MPG...

EPA testing is done at average MPH of 22 for city and 48 MPH for highway.

For those who are complaining that they are getting 26 MPG combined, go ahead and take a look at your avg MPH (cycle the right push pin in the gauge cluster) 99% of the time it will show sub 30 MPH avg speed. Therefore it is quite normal for you to be getting city MPG as a combined value. In my own testing, over a full tank of gas, when my avg MPH showed 45-50 (freeway driving on long road trip) my MPG was 36-40. When it "THOUGHT" <--THIS IS IMPORTNANT that I was doing mostly freeway, I checked the AVG MPH meter and over the last 300 miles, it showed 23 MPH and just as expected, I was getting 26 MPG.

Therefore AVG MPH = Corresponding MPG

Therefore, Subaru or the EPA did not lie, you just do too much driving in gridlock, stop and go, cold engine, etc.

Also, your gonna lose 3-5 MPG for every 10 MPH you go over 50. This is also expected since wind resistance is exponentially proportional to speed. So dont expect to get 36 MPG doing 75-80.

+1 why the **** did you go an introduce logic, I drive my car at 75mph or higher and I demand that you give me at least 40mpg while I am on that subject matter I also do not want to buy a car and have to change my oil until 25k. If you think that is far fetched well let me tell you something mister..............

An interesting article on what appears to be some Fuel Economy Sticker hijinks by Hyundai and Kia:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/...ories=obinsite

Of interest to folks here, however is that the EPA doesn't test every model, but selects only some cars to audit:

Quote:
At its National Vehicle and Fuel Emission Laboratory
(NVFEL) in Ann Arbor, Mich., EPA routinely tests vehicles – 150 to 200 a year, or about 15 percent of the possible vehicle configurations – to ensure that their performance matches the mileage and emissions data required to be submitted to EPA by automakers.
This auditing helps to ensure that vehicles on the road meet tailpipe emission standards to protect public health and the environment and that all carmakers follow the same procedures for calculating mileage estimates. EPA conducts both random and targeted audits, based on factors such as consumer complaints.
So those window stickers are done mostly on the honor system....

im haven't really complained. i have shown that the car can get 36+ mpg going 65 mph or less. the only thing that is upsetting is that at 70 mph i get about 31ish mpg which is the same as the 2012 outback i had as a loaner for a full day. after driving that car. i kind of wish i had bought that car instead. i got about 35 mpg going 60-65 mph. 37.x mpg indicated. just saying. but i got 36-40 mpg doing the same speed in the 2012 impreza. as a matter of fact my car said i had an expected range of 580 when i pulled over to get gas. which i could prove because i was almost to my destination. but i do plan on making a 557 mile trip on one tank of gas one day. of course i will be bringing a 3 gallon gas jug with me.

I have 2003 honda civic with over 190,000 miles that consistently gets 38 mpg on highway as stated when purchased new. I cannot state the same for my new 2012 subaru impreza getting 36 mpg on highway as stated when I purchased it new and I have just over 8k miles on it. Keep in mind I know these are totally different vehicles etc but estimates all much different. I am not impressed with subaru fuel economy to say the least. And for those wondering the city mpg are also less real world than stated. I own several different cars including a truck so far this impreza don't impress with it mpg's and is only car I have ever owned with such disparity in reported and real life driving like my other vehicles .

It has some improvements over the others but much to be desired when it comes to mpg rating.

I take it easy and have mixed city and hwy I live in rural area were its little traffic and only one Stop light before the highway of 55 mph I go from 45 to 55 mph and rarely catch the light. I drive in manner to conserve fuel and still cannot meet that estimated amount like my other cars.

Why Subaru USA and Subaru Canada don't compensate the difference between real world mpg like Hyundai and Kia??? I think it's a fair compromise.
I never did 27mpg and 36mpg on the highway.

Go to Fuelly.com, look up the 2012 Impreza, and see what the reported Combined MPG average is (I'll provide the data: 197 cars, 1.2 million miles tracked, 28.1 MPG and climbing).

While your individual experience may vary, the MPG shown there shows it is close to the sticker Combined Fuel Economy number, which is anywhere from 28-30 depending upon the model purchased (Fuelly does not separate the data for the manual and CVT transmission or the model of the specific car).

The Combined Fuel economy has been steadily climbing as more miles are tracked. This is probably because most people tracked their car from new, so the number reflects engine break in.

Mine is off Fuelly, because I decided to track it on my iPhone, but my overal average from new is 28.3MPG, for a car rated 28 combined.

In other words, the best data out there indicates that as a whole, this car is meeting the EPA estimates within 1-2 mpg. Let's see if the EPA audits Subaru and changes the numbers, but don't expect them to change it more than 1-2 mpg if the real world data on Fuelly is to be believed.

I was referring to your computer gauge that has the average MPH on it. Using that as a guide for a tank is what the OP was referring to.

Trip a is 27 or so this is what considered combined correct? used trip b as reference of long steady trip. Trip b is always higher than a.

Obviously you're not much of a golfer.

The gauge shows, Miles until empty, Average MPG, Average MPH, Engine running time, and something else. Dude how do you not know this in 8k miles?

Press the button on the right side of the gauge cluster to cycle through them all. The left button resets the trip

Consumer Reports does their own testing. If you really want to see your expected mpg, check them out. I compared all 5 imports that got 27 mpg combined in their tests. That would be the Impreza 27/36, the Toyota Matrix 21/29, Volkswagen GTI 21/31, Kia Forte 22/32, and Volkswagen Jetta 22/33.

Compared to the average of the other 4, the Impreza's ratings of 27/36 were *inflated* by over 25% city, and over 15% highway."

For those of you who think we should stop complaining, apparently this would be news to you:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/inflated
(It would be #3)

EPA investigated Hyundai and Kia based on "a dozen complaints".

Obviously the car does not perform as advertised. So why should we stop complaining?

Here *are* the places to complain to though:
http://www.consumerwatchdog.org/node/add/complaint
and
http://www.epa.gov/otaq/oms-cmt.htm

I'm getting 24mpg with an average speed of about 30mph. I have every right to complain.

If I could drive on a highway every day and get 40mpg I wouldn't care, but the city rating is bs.
