at the risk of starting a giant pissing contest here it goes

how do different type of dynos compare to each other...all things being equal

but i always here mustang and dynapack dynos read high

I think you mean mustang and dynapacks read lower typically.

the tuner or owner can make a dyno read 550 whp or 390 whp on the same car.

mustangs are usually low. Dynapacks are usually higher end on numbers

And all of this depends on the settings on the dyno. The software, and many other things like location of the dyno.

If only this subject were a dead horse.

yea it is all in settings really. I made very similar numbers on a dynojet as i did on a dyno dynamics.

Would love to see what dyno queen #s i put down on higher reading dynos (none available in nor-cal). But i manage to run 12.1-2s with just 290 on GST's 'heartbreak' mustang dyno. I believe 315-320 will break 11's on a mustang.

460whp on the DynoDynamic with no correction and I trapped 95@1/8 and 126 up top.. 510whp trapped 100@1/8th...

I can compare two (sort of). Similar weather and no changes to the car. The Engine Logics Dyno Dynamics dyno read 333whp and the MZM's Mustang dyno read 332whp. At that power I was trapping 114-115mph in the 1/4 mile in mid 90 degree temps with about 90% humidity at roughly sea level.

Dynos are good for seeing power gains between mods, assuming you're using the same dyno. I think trap speed is a decent indicator too, though driving ability can play a roll there.

Actually some of the lowest numbers I've seen have been on a MAHA dyno...

Also keep in mind all things are not equal. Like the dynapack, its connected to the hubs so you dont have the rotational weight of the wheels, while a Mustang dyno uses rollers....

I prefer the dynapack since there is no chance of wheel slippage to throw off readings and of course the results are pretty . Its funny/scary watching people sit on the fenders of a high horsepower Honda on a roller dyno to prevent wheel slippage....

It is all in the setup of the dyno. The owner can make the dyno read anything. An honest shop will use the same settings for every car so you can compare run to run on the same dyno. You cannot compare run to run across different dynos, even of the same brand.

I think I am qualified to answer this question since I have tuned on multiple machines of each type across this country. The lowest is the mustang by far. The Dynodynamics reads the same as the Dynojet in most cases. If its set to stock specs about 15 lower. The Dynapack typicaly reads the highest. On Avg the Mustang will read 40 to 50whp lower then the Dyanpack. 30 lower then the dynojet and dynodynamics. Of course all the machines are adjustable in some respects so your results may vary.

452 whp on a dynapack with no drivetrain loss correction (just SAE) and I trapped best of 98 in the 1/8th and 127.7 in the quarter.

Typical was 96-97 and 124-125 respectively.

Seems right on the money to me. If you want to include two less common dynos, the Maha will occupy the lowest reading spot and the DTS will take over the highest reading spot.

All a dyno is good for is a tuning tool. Hell if the tuner wants he can make it so your stock sti read 500whp. Or 1 hp.

Elevation also has a factor on readout, same with climate or temperature

It's pretty difficult to significantly fudge the numbers from a Dynojet. Short of putting the weather station in an oven or machining out weight from the rollers, there isn't much you can do. Well, I guess you can input a much higher altitude... The other dynos all have user adjustable "correction factors" which make it really easy to make the dyno spit out just about whatever numbers the operator wants it to.

This is one of the main reasons that Dyno Dynamics have the "Shootout" mode. It locks all the settings and disables all power and torque corrections to give reproducible results between runs. This is the dyno most commonly used in Dyno shootouts in Australia.

The biggest problem with the DD though, is in the strapping down of the vehicle. Too tight and you get low numbers, too loose and you get slippage and low numbers. In most cases, strapping the car down is the most crucial element of most dynos of this type.

Anyhoo, I've always stated, and many will agree, dynos are for tuning.
