Speedring Kart Racing Report
It is an awesome facility! Randy, Joseph and I had a blast! The track surface is nicely polished with just enough traction to keep the kart in control, but slick enough to throw it into a drift. The karts were much faster than the InsideTrack too.
Joe came in with the fastest lap at 32.6xx and I was second behind him at 32.8xx. I forgot what time Randy got and I lost my time sheet. For those of you going tomorrow, have fun! I won't be able to join you since I'll be out of town. Merry X'mas! -Adrian

Hello,
Anyone know the track record through friday? Just so we know how fast to go and so I can slow down before the laptimer so as to avoid embarrasing the record holder... Joel |

LOL... Joel, u r too funny!!
I don't know what the track record is. But Joe's 32.6 is a pretty fast time. The fastest lap from the session before ours was in the 33's, and in one your posts you said Corey did a 32.8xx..... and I know Corey is a pretty darn good Solo2 racer. So why don't you shoot for low 32's.... but hey, don't feel bad if you can't break 33's. -Adrian |

Joel, I will give you a signal if you are in danger of embarassing the lap record holder and should slow down. That signal would be "both hands on the wheel" -- so watch for it k?
The track absolutely rocks!!! Turn 1 and 2 -- high speed right and left, tap the brakes and drift through to scrub off speed for... Turn 3 -- very technical 120-degree right. Actually people simlpy come in too hot after the fun in the first two turns. Remember Turns 1 and 2 at Inside Track???? This is where I "reverse T-Boned" Randy. That is when you come in FAST sideways, hit a guy who just spun out in the front bumper, and your kidneys give you a lecture on that kind of behavior for the next 24 hours. Turn 4 - dogleg left, if you can manage enough speed off of turn 3. Turn 5 - autocross-style 180 degree left, use a very late apex to set up for... Turn 6 - 90 degree right, with just enough time to move to the outside for... Turns 7 and 8 -- the Esses. My favorite part of the track -- these turns are perfectly timed to the "wagging" of the kart! Treat it as a Scandinavian flick (so I don't want to see any Subaru drivers losing speed on these!!) -- tail out on turn 7, overcorrect and collect it for turn 8. Whoo-hoo!! Turn 9 - picking up speed here after a glorious run through the Ess. Trying to keep the kart's wheels on the ground as you accelerate through the gentle right. Turn 10 - FAST 90 degree right!!! Very Thunderhill-esque (Thunderhill's T8 anybody??), just as you begin to feel settled after Turn 9, the barrier ahead approaches ominously. A quick pinch of the brakes and you pray it's enough to prevent you from hitting the boxed wall way around the other side. Since this turn leads onto the front straight, I think this is probably where a good track driver (as opposed to autocrosser) could pick up the most time. Turn 11 - By this time you're at 3/4 of top speed (probably 30-40mph), you just passed all the people gawking through the window, and get to take one last gulp of air before wrangling with the jittery steering to get the kart to make this gentle 90 degree right. Full throttle all the way through until the 90 degree right at Turn 1 again. And round and round it goes!!! It's one hell of a course that will give autocrossers (T3-5), track junkies (T1-2, 9-11), and rallyists (T7-8, T1-2) all something to love. If only they had segment timing!! |

Hello,
So, Joe got a good time while he was on the track with a bunch of pansies. Get all the guys on the track so Joe has some competition and what's he do? Oh, he gets black flagged, he crashes, he destroys the damn engine belts on the carts, makes us have to slow-lap for 4 minutes of a 12 minute session, etc etc etc. And he gets sucky times in the high 32s. Basically, by himself on the track, he thinks he can take people. Get some competition going and he's all smoke. =D That being said, Shiv kicked everyone's ass, again. He didn't beat Joe's time that Joe got magically while we weren't there... I LOVE that place. Holy freaking shee-at. The track is awesome, the karts are awesome. They're much faster than inside track and Dromo, and they stick better, handle better, etc. (of course, they're new). Peter Knoot, the president and CEO, joined us for a session after Joe left. He's a very friendly guy. I like him, but only because I kicked his butt I know Shiv got a 30.950 (says so on the sheet). Paul got a 31.1 something. I think I was third with a 31.6. The track record is a guy named Tony C with a 30.532. We can take him. BTW, look at your time sheets. Cool info on them. My fastest lap averaged 28.3 mph. My total average was 27.1 mph. Cool freaking stuff. Next time a group wants to go, I'm there! BTW, I noticed something... for those of you who have no racing experience, this is a GREAT chance to get out and learn something. By following a proper line, I was able to pass many people. When Shiv passed me (only shiv passed me, and only once ), I tried following his line. He selected a much tighter line than I did and completed his braking better and was obviously a better driver than me. But anyone who goes there will learn something. My lap times in the first session dropped by about 0.5 seconds per lap after Shiv passed me. I learned something about lines. Anyone can do the same. Just watch what someone faster than you is doing... Great experience. We should DEFINATELY do the next BAM there Joel |

Joels right. Speedring is indeed better than The Inside Track. The course is bigger and the karts may be a little faster. I was talking to Peter Knoot about the the possibility of having "club karts" (i.e. extra fast karts) for the faster folks. He smile wryly, saying that the kart frame they they are using will support two 6.5hp engines. Doubling the horsepower will make those karts quite fast and really seperate the boys from the men!
However, that's not going to happen any time soon. But one day... it'll be sweet. Real balls-to-the-wall-with-pucker-factor Karting! As it stands, the karts themselves aren't really that challenging to drive. Once you know and drive the line reasonably well, there isn't really a way to go much faster. Of course, I'm not close to being there yet as there are a few parts of the track I'm still working on. Didn't begin to figure it out until just before leaving. But the limits of the karts aren't very high. Can't really induce throttle-on oversteer while exiting the corners-- something very common in real race cars/karts. And if the kart wasn't so easy to bog at turn exit, one could try some more traditional slow in fast out cornering lines. But this is all quite knit-picky since it is probably one of the best indoor karting places in the US. I'd definitely be up for a Speedring BAM! shiv |

Hello,
I posted my smack directed at Joe, where's his answer? Actually, Shiv, we're the only losers here. Everyone else is spending time with their families. Joel |
