Default New STi questions

Right now I've got a 2002 BMW M3 coupe. My daily driver is a 95 Accord wagon. I'm considering selling the M3 and the wagon, to get a WRX or preferably STi. One car, less money than the M3, but more pep than my current wagon.

Questions:
- Are there torque and power curves out for STi and WRX?

- What is the redline for the STi?

- What kind of quality do people expect from the STi? Better in any respects than WRX? I'm thinking quite a few things will be a notch up, like drivetrain / suspension.

- It looks like the blue seats in the photos are Alcantara. Can anyone confirm this? I've got Alcantara in my M3 and love it...way better than the full leather seats. I'd get it again, no questions.

- Do people feel comfortable their dealers will be able to properly service the STi? Service has been very poor from the local BMW dealer. I don't know much about the 2 Subaru dealers in Calgary. Sales staff everywhere seem to be short a few screws... last subaru dealer I visited two years ago insisted WRX would no longer be sold with Auto trans, just because he wanted to get rid of the car off the lot and I wanted a factory order. I was looking for a stick (different color) but walked because it's hard to tolerate blatant nonsense and keep a straight face.

- Any concerns I should be aware of buying an STi or Subaru in general? Some of you WRX owners may have a heads up in this respect. How do you feel Subaru has treated you so far with regards to QC and service?

- What about a wagon version of the STi?

I apologize in advance for the last question. I know that STi questions belong in "some other forum", but I could not find one. If there is a better forum for this, let me know.

I went to the "news / rumors" section and the first thing I saw there is a redirector to this forum for STi news. I quickly searched the General forum for "wagon" but didn't see anything specific to STi wagon there either after looking through 3 pages of results.

That last question is quite important (to me) as the WRX / STI sedans just don't do much for me. I like the wagon styling better and I like the practicality better. I'm ready to put down a deposit on an STi wagon if it comes out. Otherwise I'll just sell the M3 and hold onto the Honda or settle for a WRX.

Some people may be wondering why I'd get a WRX or STi vs M3... I can post a separate thread on that if you want. I think the STi is better for my expectations and requirements. Hey, who wouldn't like to drive both.

You may want to opt for a 2003 WRX wagon then. STi wagons are not available.

what are you planning on doing exactly with your 02 M3? (what is the color and option, your sell price?)

Depending upon your patience, you may want to hold out for the Legacy wagon 2.5-turbo which should come out some time between fall of this year and spring of next. Hopefully the sooner than the later.

I haven't seen them yet. All we know for sure is 300 HP @ 6000 RPM and 300 lb-ft at 4000 RPM.

7k

I think the whole car will be stiffer. Drivetrain & suspension are much stronger than the WRX.

It's Ecsaine. Think it's similar to Alcantara.

Like everything else, it varies from dealer to dealer. Some are great, some not. Talk to some Sooby people in your area to find out about the service departments.

- What about a wagon version of the STi?

Ain't gonna happen anytime soon.

Hey, I'm selling my 328is to get the STi. Granted, it's no E46 M3, but the STi is gonna be one heck of a car.

Thanks for the info guys!

HFTurbo:
I was wondering if there might be an STi wagon in a year or so. But I can see that might compete with a Legacy 2.5 turbo if that comes out. I think I'm hesitant now before I take any dealers word for something. IE... 6 months after E46 M3 came out, SMG II was being offered. When my order came in, I wanted to get it, but was told Canada wasn't getting SMG any time soon. Guess what... it became an option for the very next allocation. Doesn't hurt to wait out the first model year I think.

Paul:
How certain is everyone that the Legacy 2.5 turbo is coming to North America? I saw the Best Motoring clip of the sedan. I think a wagon version of that would be great... it's around the same size as my Accord wagon... a little big but I can live with it if there is no STi wagon. Next Fall or Spring would be fine with me... time to save up, and time to see if there will be an STi wagon.

snoogans:
Are you in Canada? If so, message me and I'll give you a call on the M3 if you're serious. If you're in the US, it's probably easier to find another car there than deal with the hassle of customs and registration of an out-of-country automobile.

Bill:
Thanks again. I'm wondering if you are selling your 328 for the same reason I'm selling my M3. Nice car inside and out, but the STi should be a more practical car year-round. Perhaps not the same performance in the dry as M3 but I live close to the rockies, and I take it out when roads are clean. M3's do fine with winter tires, but it's not a vehicle you'll take snow bogging or running around gravel roads, etc. I also tend to worry about every little ding and vandals a lot. I can see something like an STi or Legacy 2.5 turbo wagon would be quite nice... perhaps not the performance or handling of the M3, but a lot better compliance on bad roads, and more practical in bad roads and weather. There are a lot of fun snow drives I've done in the Accord with winter tires and chains, and I can only imagine what it would be like with an STi with studded high-profile tires.

Thanks again gang.

Absolutely certain. Subaru/STi is on record for that.

For certain:
Wider track than current Legacy.
Lighter weight.
Bigger rubber.
Bigger brakes.
Quicker, sharper steering rack of the new design, much less slop in it.
5-speed autobox or 5-speed manual

More vague:
Power - higher than 210hp (USDM Forester 2.5t), but less than STi (300hp). I'd be willing to bet on something around 250hp. Torque will be somewhere between 240-280ft/lb's, again somewhere around 250ft/lb's. Probably 260.

Suspension - I think it will be somewhere between the Japanese B4 RSK spec and the current USDM Legacy. So somewhat softer than the JDM version, but not too soft, because of the extra power. I think it would match the outgoing twin-turbo Legacy B4 in Japan.

Price - IMO, around the current H6 models pricing.

Cheers,

Paul Hansen
