If you make an effort to get things mixed, like pour the Etoh in, and then top off the tank with gasoline, or go a bit easy for a few miles so normal driving stops and starts turns etc. give the fuel time to mix well, I wouldn't expect to have much problem. As always with the do it your self stuff just like the toluene there is some small risk of mishap. For most of us its much easier to get the E85, as unless you have a direct connection to an industrial user of ethanol its not cheap if its not denatured due to BATF regs. Larry |

What would the effects of WI have on E85? Any serious negatives? another performance boost? anything?

With E85, I don't think WI would be necessary...but I'll let someone else handle this one.

but as far as the water goes, it breaks down the ethanol over time....not sure how fast though or what would happen under combustion...any Chem E's in here? |

WI would probably not be necessary for its customary usage to raise octane, ---------- in considering the question there may be an application for it.
If you ran E85 on a gasoline tune you'd be very lean and WI might allow you to do that no harm no foul ----- Hmmm food for thought. You'd still get the CEL Larry |

Perhaps the WI would allow for better gas milage, cool the intake charge, and maybe still clean the cylinders?

Although E85 has a pump octane rating of about 100, it's still not knock-proof and, for example, you shouldn't try to eliminate that huge restriction in the air intake path that's known as the intercooler.
I expect that if you're optimizing your fuel enrichment map and ignition advance maps to produce best torque for E85, you'd still run into some load/rpm conditions where knock prevents the use of best torque settings and that is where water injection would help produce more torque. |

With gas prices jumping another $0.30 this week due to the hurricane, anyone thinking of creating an AP map to run wastegate only, 7psi, on stock injectors and E85?
Another question would be, what is the max boost you can run with E85 on stock injectors and stay under the 80-90% duty cycle mark? 10psi? Last edited by Revision; 08-30-2005 at 12:08 PM. |

Seriously alot more boost than you need to go very fast. I regularly run around with my boost at 12-14 psi on 100% E85 and have all the performance I need for highway driving and some fun. Octane wise E85 will support just about any boost level your turbo is capable of producing. If you include an upgraded (or crushed fuel pressure regulator to bump fuel pressure) you can probably run over 20 psi to about 4000 rpm, and 15-16 psi to redline. Due to E85's higher octane it will tolerate leaner mixtures than you can get away with on most gasolines. Larry |

Just to chime in and whore my post count
This simulates the same experiment I read about somewhere on the internet about finding an E85 approved oil. I now use mobil 1 synthetic, which is E85 approved. The old, cheap pennzoil I was running wasn't approved for it. I filled 2 test tubes with about a tablespoon of E85. The one on the left turned a bit of a cloudy white with Mobil1. According to that experiment I can't find the link to, that's what E85 approved oil does. The other was this watery brown color with E85 mixed with dino oil. Regular oil dilutes with E85. The synthetic oil actually looked like a water/oil mix, with the oil suspended in the mixture rather than sitting on top. I'm also going to the dyno this weekend to test the full E85 tune . |

Just filled up again after running 25% ethanol mix. Car seems to like running 95 octane.
Got 23 mpg in mixed driving. Normally, I get 20-22mpg in mixed driving. Car is stock, except for a RiftsWRX tuned AP. |

So is the price of E85 going up with the price of gas or is it jumping less?

In my area still priced at about 75% of pump premium, $2.39 for E85 and $3.29 for premium over the labor day holiday.
Lets keep the cost of oil discussions out of this thread, better posted to one of the other threads. I'd like to keep this focused on the tech side of E85 tuning. Larry |

we should start a website on e85
like www.fueledbycorn.com and put stickers on our cars to spread the word. If we want e85 to become a reality it will take lobbying and common knowledge. Most people have no idea what e85 is and it really could be a solution to our fuel problem by drastically reducing fuel consumption. |
