Arrow Need DIY Cone-Air intake "prop-up-device" tips for MAF EJ18 (or any MAF car)

Just got a Cone air filter for my car today from rich AKA MPREZYA Poped it right on my stock tubing replacing the airbox... It rattles around a little and I know folks have done some DIY's (Racecarriot I know did one) to help hold up the filter...

I was wondering if anyone had some nice detailed instructions on this? And yes, of course, I searched through what I could remember to search through about it, and didnt come up with squat

I think since im using the stock piping from the MAF back, that my filter is sitting a bit closer to the fender well than others (its almost touching the hole where the MAF stock airbox gets air from) so some of the Weapon-R and other brand intake custom jobs might not fit...

Default me too

I have the same problem with mine. the whole thing rattles around. Since im at school i dont have much tmie for the car anymore so what I did was zip tie it to hold it against the wheel well and reduce rattling for now until i have some time to make up a nice mount.

Kostamojen - If you stil have your stock air-box, maybe cutting the section which holds it into place an fitting somekind of brace/whatever with rubber or a softer material would hold it into place and reduce/prevent the noise. You might find what you need at a home-harware store.

that wouldnt work for me, the MAF sensor bolts up to the box and is flush in the inside leaving no room for a filter to clamp on. I was going to make something that either used the bolt holes ofr the stock airbox or thee also seems to be a hole on the fender behind the hole where airbox got its air from. I was thinking about coming out from that and down or just using the stock holes. Havnt had time to play yet.

Mines exactly like Hawks. I went in there and tied it down with a zip tie in two locations, and put some foam and doublesided sticky tape in the two spots where the filter were touching stuff so it wouldnt scrape anything... I'd rather have a mount to the bolts from where the bolts that came from the airbox bolt locations were or something like that, and I need the stock airbox in case I need to return it to stock ever.

i was gonna say you can check the pics of mine.

i made it for like $3 with parts from a government surplus store. it's basically a piece of angle iron, a flat bar of aluminum that had holes drilled in it, and another piece of aluminum in an L shape that i could bolt the bar to, and vary the height/position since there's a gap that runs through the middle...i bolted it down to the stock holes where the airbox attatches, then ran a zip tie through one of the holes on the bar and around the intake to hold it down. there are also small patches of duct tape where the bracket could rub the fender, so it doesn't scrape through the paint. so yes, it's a real hot rod, now that it has duct tape and zip ties on it.

If I didnt have the huge ABS thingy I could have it just sitting in some foam or something with a zip tie holding it down That thing you have racecar wont fit mine, cause my intake is a little farther away, and that looks aweful complicated too...

I bolted it to the engine, so the intake moves WITH the engine ,

Where on the engine did you bolt it to? Thats the whole problem with mine right now, mine moves WITH the engine too, and in the process of doing so it smacks into everythign else. although after i tied it down it reduced that a lot. Did you make a long bracket? My piping is so long i dont know how I could attach it in such a way. Since the MAF is pretty much in line with the stock airbox mounting points I would think it is easiest to just use those. I am curious though. Ide like to know in detail where you mounted it. Do you have any pictures?

I reused the rubber mounts that were on the stock airbox so there is a little play there.

I plan on taking a few pics real soon... Initially it was touching the ABS too, so I pushed the pipe back a bit and played with the angles, ...I have an OLD pic (before I put the bolt on..

I bolted it to the manifold...you can see where I photoshop'ed a redl line...close to the air filter.

Old Pic

you may have to shorten the pipe a bit... but I feel much more comfortable with the set up and revving the engine does nothing to make the intake knock into anything..

Theres a thread about it here too

just wondering... this is kinda off topic to what you guys are doing, but is there a loss of low end torque even with the stock box still there?

or w/ the MY95s, there is no more stock box near the throttle body? hmm

I have gained bottom end if anything, at low speeds in fifth there is alot more acceleration than before.
As soon as the temprature get within the right range I will see how my GTec results compare to last year.

I dont quite understand what you mean. The 95's didnt have a 2nd box in front of thethrottle body if thats what you meant, we just have the airbox in front of the MAF. the biggest difference i saw was the sound, lol.

RHITB: Ooh, I like that, and I saw the stuff today at home debot to make that too Does it work as a heat shield as well?

Update: Ya, went to home depot today and bought some insulation foam for now... I looked at some of the metal work stuff to see if I could make anything and couldnt tell, so I just bought $3 of some sticky foam, and a 3 foot length peice of 1.5" x 1.5" foam that I used to make a "ring" that went around the end of the intake so now it doesnt touch anything and its kindof like that $15 foam intake insulator that K+N sells anyway exept just one smidgen of it Ill take a pic thursday and post it...

yeah i guess that's the difference?... there is another airbox where the filter sits in for my MY02 RS... and people said that if we use an intake like the weapon R which uses a cone filter and no stock air box, it will lose low end torque.

what i was wondering is if i use some sort of tubing and then use the stock air box w/o filter and have a cone filter at the end, what kind of results should i expect... hmm

Kostamojen: the Heat sheald is Lexan painted with heat resistant paint It works great!
Oh and a good tip, if you want it to look pretty get some door edge moulding to finish of the edges.

you mean you can buy HEAT RESISTANT paint?!?... i didn't know that ... hmmm so how good are those compared with other things suggested like header wrap?

edit: how good as in insulating the heat out... and separating the two sections?...

If your painting an intake pipe or similar you can use Ceramic based to paint which will have similar effect to ceramic coating.

The paint I uaed is for Indutrial boilers etc it is supposed to stop reduce the transfer of radiated heat.

I have not measured my intake temp so I'm not sure of how good of a job it does.
