Default Production Subaru BRZ Revealed in Tokyo

Production 2013 Subaru BRZ Revealed
By Ryan Douthit, Driving Sports TV

Click for Video Version

The heart of Subaru is the Boxer motor. Now, for the first time, Subaru is putting its venerable boxer into a small, lightweight rear-wheel drive sports car. It's called the BRZ, and after 3 years of teasing, the production model finally made its big debut at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Outside of how it looks, what else do we know about this super-light sports car? First up, the boxer motor. Both the BRZ and it's kissing cousin, the Toyota GT 86, come standard with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated boxer featuring Toyota's direct-injection system to improve economy. This motor puts down around 200 horsepower and 151 ft-lbs of torque through a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. That may not sound like much power, but remember, this car is expected to weight nearly 2500 lbs. A rear limited slip differential is standard.

For those expecting all-wheel drive, here's something to consider: I've discussed this car with someone that has had intimate time behind the wheel of an early development BRZ, and he characterized the handling as "perfect." According to my source, if engineers decided to cram an all-wheel drive system into the vehicle it would have only succeeded in ruining it.

So there you have it. The 2013 Subaru BRZ. It will go into full production in early 2012 and, other than a few minor styling queues, is exactly the same as the Toyota version - which is now being called the GT 86.

If you're looking for a more extreme BRZ, you don't have to wait long. Subaru's STI version is certain to be right around the corner.

Nice car.
Add 100hp and 150lb of torque and then you have a real fun car!

Ya, that might do it.

I honestly don't trust U.S. curb weight numbers until I see them actually listed in the service manual. Its impossible to compare curb weights from other markets, and each option on a car changes the weight and thats listed in surprising detail in the service manuals too.

i wonder why they made it almost exactly the same as the scion? Makes me think there might be an STi version (or at least an upgraded one) coming later.

Simple, cost. This vehicle was made in conjunction with Toyota... Odds are Toyota wanted Subaru's low CG boxer motor/drivetrain and Subaru wanted Toyota's chassis and RWD plateform but neither wanted to pay 100% of it on their own as its future is uncertain for the market.... for example the only car off the top of my head i can say is a true competitor is the genius coupe which isnt selling like hotcakes.

You really need to put yourself in the shoes of the automakers, its not easy introducing new vehicles in the market. Thie vehicle is all about driving dynamics.. something the american customer for the most part doesn't understand, we Americans always want HP no matter what, I think many domestics show a good example of that, and Honda shows the puriest example of vise versa. Over the years it has been starting to change I do admit.
Also, this vehicle needs to be fuel efficient and low cost... once there is enough interest their will be higher power models guaranteed.... but they can't be released first.

Joint venture, Toyota designs (I believe) with Subaru power.

No turbo = No fun. STi version should have an STi motor, now that would be fun.

The reason they have a near 50/50 weight balance and this "perfect" handling is in part because of the lower mounted bower engine - lower than your WRX or STI. It's also because the engine was pushed back closer to the cabin.

If they used an STI engine, it would sacrifice a lot of the handling. What's the point in making another STI to compete with an STI? If you like the STI, buy another STI lol. This is a different car. Someone will make a turbo kit for it... But, it needs this motor and it needs it where it is.

Sounds and looks great flogged on the track like that.

He definitely seemed to like it a lot.
