Most importantly is the following;
If you cover it while it is super clean, then your risk is minimal.
If you bag it dirty, you will scratch her up.

Albeit, the quality& material used does play a part too.

I live in FL and the pollen is ridiculous. Couple that with working on the beach and I need to wash my car like every 3 days.

Here in L.A. I hand wash every 3rd day sometimes 4.

We has Tar,sand, cal trans yellow paint,Ashes from fires, and just like every one else...dirt & bird waste that contains the aforementioned sand along with the bile containing bad acids.

Then, the santa ana winds make sure we get it in a mix everywhere we go.

Still,IMO a good car cover used on a un contaminated surface is great for not only protection from the elements,
but thieves as well.

....it depends on which fabric you choose. However, several (if not all of their selections) are from Kimberly Clark (Dustop, Noah, etc.):

also, I try not to cover the car unless it sits for more than a few days. If you do this, just spend about 15 mins to wipe the car down with a quick detailer before throwing the cover on.

I would not use a car cover in a high wind area. It will most likely scratch the car regaurdless of what you do.

Carport / tent?

Waxing the car may also aid in resisting smaller scratches from debris that may fly up into the car cover.

I always cover my car at work, takes me about 45secs to put the cover on. keeps the car about 30 degrees cooler inside, well worth it for me.

I've got a California Car Cover, and they're great. Custom fit for your model, nice soft materials at the points of contact, and high quality design and build. They're pricey, for sure, but if you use a cover, I'd use no less.
That being said, I'm probably selling mine soon. If anyone's interested, I've got one for an '04 WRX wagon, and I'll sell for a good price. PM me

I've been using mine for quite some time it's saved me a lot. Cal Car Cover as well for me. I've used it in the garage, under a car port and just in the open air in all conditions. The cover I have isn't water resistent since it's breathable but the cover does dry easily. I make sure the car is relatively clean prior to covering and if it's rained and I take the cover off, I usually have to hit the car with some quick detailer but in general no complaints.

Yes and no. Put a high quality cover over a car with clean paint and the risk is minimal. But put a cheap cover on and/or the paint is dirty, you may be asking for some paint marring.
