Mastro are the ones who urged me to bring it in for the test, I've never claimed to be burning anything close to a quart per 1200mi.
With 20 weight, it burns a quart in 3000-4000 miles. I think the overfilling was done to make my car go the interval without an oil light. Sort of to shut me up, I guess.
If I take it to another dealer, I have to PAY for the test, and the next nearest dealer is too far away to be going back and forth every thousand miles.
I only went along with Mastro because they had told me that they might make me a really good deal on a used car. But after the GROSS overfill I don't think I'd want them touching the car. I was extremely polite in bringing it to the service mgr's attention, but the fact that they didn't take the car right back in and do the job right left me disappointed.
So now I'm doing my own REAL test, making the lemonade.
Like I said, I'm honestly just trying to make the best of this aweful mess.

Glad for your replacement Paradis; chanceux !
My stealership is basically just f8ing around with me for now.
Which dealership are you going to?
I know that (at least) Blainville & Levis are, on this topic, the most responsives and the only one thus far (plus yours) that have replaced rings & engines.

Ahah Salut DjBono :P

Sorry i'm really bad to write in English

From Google Translate:

Hi DjBono ahah: P
My dealer is the Lévis (for maintenance).
The first time, as I expected, they said it was Mount normal.
But finally on my first test of consumption (I called the dealer takes a pint each), they told me that it was a problem on several Impreza and engineers work to fix it, so before changing engine, they must find the cause. I should have a new engine eventually (at least they have admitted to me that it was really a problem).
And otherwise, if ca too silly, I am able to blow an engine in 5 years and 100,000 km and ca as can be quite pleasant

If it burns the 30 weight at any appreciable rate, then yes, I am considering that, STeye.
So far so good. I'm resisting the temptation to look at the dipstick until another 400 miles. What I'm hoping for is little to no consumption in at least a few thousand miles.

On another note, while I know plenty of people don't like VW's, that brand new dealer 1000 feet from my front door sure is tempting. I can't figure out if my eyes were playing tricks on me, but a couple weeks ago I thought I saw a new red two door golf that had a 2.5 badge and a 4motion logo. I can't seem to find any info on such a model. All I find is news about the newest Golf R. Which, I won't lie, makes me sick with envy. But alas, the pricetag is way beyond what I'd pay for any car.

Today I saw my third "other 2012 impreza on the road". Every one I've seen has a really old guy driving it. The kind who don't even notice when you wave or smile. This one was MBP with the moonroof. That's one option I wish I'd sprung for, but it was too pricey for me. MBP is a nice looking color. I still have no regrets about going ISM. I DO wish the paint didn't chip quite so easily, though.

It's funny that you mention that because I've also been seeing a lot more '12+ Imprezas recently and most of them are being driven by older people.

The oil consumption problem (if they have it) must suck for the older people that don't any of their own maintenance. The nearest Subaru dealership around here is about a 45 minute drive. I wonder if dealerships top the oil off for those people that don't even know how to open their own hood, or they just tell them they're SOL.

Here in FL, most subarus, with the exception of the wrx/sti's, are driven by the elderly retirees from up north. As a native floridian, we just don't see as many subarus driven by locals. A few soccer mom types with foresters and outbacks, but not too many folks in my demographic and area drive subarus. At 33, I'm always the youngest customer at dealers, and they seemed a little surprised when I whooped out some cash and ordered mine.

HA, Ill respond with yes old ladys and Men. Saw one Younger (30s) woman driving one but she didnt appear to even notice anything at the stop light besides her Iphone.

Had a guy pull up to my car at a stop sign (he was late 20s) and asked me how i liked it. He was driving an Older VW passat/jetta station wagon.

Here, around montreal, I get to see a dozen a day. They really are popular. Every chance I get, I ask the driver about their oil consumption... so far, all of whom I had asked had "just gotten it" so no clue on consumption.
The only one that had 10000kms on it made his first service at 4000km (because that's what the dealer (same as mine?) recommended ????) and so had no trouble at that time.

djbono I am in Laval (bought from Subaru de Laval). And my oil light just came on for a second time.

First time from new was at 8000kms. I had the oil changed at 10,000kms and now it just came on again at 15,000kms.

So I am half way before needing another oil change and I have to fill it up again!

Having spoken to Laval they just said "It's normal", just like my squeaking seat is "normal".

I am going to call and speak to the Service Department manager right now......

Yup; sorry for that Brian.
Only thing I can STRONGLY SUGGEST is you bring your car to Blainville from now on; they are excellent and spot on - and do not try to hide this issue /f* with you.

So you're now consuming 1L/5000km - first time was 1L/8000km (unless they had orinigally over-filled it) your consumption rate is alarmingly increasing... SOon you'll be "one of us" at 1L/3000km !

About the seat squeak, I haven't yet told it to my service mgr, but I can't stand it anymore, it's just too annoying.

Also - can't wait to see his face when I give him a USB key with a 1gb Xcl sheet when I bring the car in after 2000k on the "consumptino test." I've recorded my throttle position, engine temp, rev, and a whole plethora of other params all along we've started the "test".
So far, I haven't redlined it and I have the data to prove it.

I left the engine to cool for a couple of hours and checked the dip stick and it is just barely at the minimum marker. Last time I checked it a few weeks ago it was a little below the maximum.

Just called and spoke to the service manager. I had the car booked in for Monday to sort out all the squeaks which they "couldn't replicate" replicate last time and asked that they actually look properly into the oil consumption this time.

I asked him if they have any other reports of oil consumption and he said no. I asked him if he had any other complaints about squeaks and he said no.

Will wait for the response on Monday afternoon and report back.

dj, might be heading to Blainville pretty soon considering the service at Laval.

I just spoke to my good friend that is the head technician at a dealership. He said that he has seen a few cases of consumption issues with some of the new Imprezas. Specifically he has seen them in manual transmission cars. For those that have issues, do you have 5-speed or CVT?

I have a 5MT with negligible consumption. If it consumes 1/2-quart in 5k miles, it's a lot. Currently have 7k miles on the odometer.

I have the CVT and my consumption appears to be getting worse.

This being my first Subaru and first boxer engine, I don't know enough to be overly concerned right now.

What does concern me is having to put a litre of oil in it every 3000miles/5000kms. This is the 12th vehicle I have owned and the only one that used to drink oil a little was one of my Alfa Romeos and yet it consumed far less oil than my Impreza.
