Autocrossing a Forester?
Has anyone autocrossed a Forester? Sounds bizarre, I know, but it just came to my attention that the Forester is up to 450 pounds lighter than my Legacy GT. Basically, the Forester is shorter and lighter than my Legacy, with the same drivetrain. It rides higher, but that can be fixed legally, in ST. It may also be narrower. I think it would make a better autocrosser than my Legacy GT wagon, with just a few changes. Can anyone confirm or deny? Would anyone near Illinois like to try autocrossing their Forester? You can use my tires if you'll let me co-drive. Why isn't there a Forester Forum?

I don't think SCCA event's would allow it..
am not sure.. I just think I remember them saying no trucks.. is a forester a truck? don't know. I'd love to see it eitherway though. |

The Forester is based off of the Impreza chassis with the Impreza engine and driveline (or rather the other way around, but you get the point).
I don't see a reason why a Forester wouldn't be a good autocross vehicle as long as it was lowered (a lot) to improve the handling enough. Hell, I was even thinking about it since the sTurbo is supposed to come to the states next year. |

I'm pretty trucks are allowed, not sure what class, but there is a guy who Auto-X's his older style V8 Dodge dakota. He does pretty well for a turck. but the Forester would do much better. I'll Auto-X anyones forester for them if they'll let me!

You just have to convince them... Keith's pal autoxed his S-10 Extreme (lowered S-10 with meaty wheels)... should be pretty easy considering it's just a tall Impreza.

been there, done that, got spanked by it... it was put in H-stock because it's an unclassified subaru. had R1's and custom exhaust. really pretty cool. Proceded to spank almost everyone except the high horsepower cars. sjd |

FWIW, pickup trucks are almost always allowed to autocross at SCCA events. Sport Futility Vehicles are usually not, although it is at the discretion of the event's Safety Steward. I have seen an experienced driver allowed to run a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I would think the Forester's distinction as the only 'mini-ute' which does *not* require a rollover warning sticker would help in this case, if required. I'm not surprised to hear that that Forester was fast, it is not nearly as different from an Impreza as I thought. Basically, it's taller, and 200 pounds heavier. I wonder how different the suspension is. |

Subie Gal, That is one of the nicest non-subie photo of a Forester I have everseen. My wife wants to trade the OBS in on Forester S (monochrome). I told her only if we can be a two scooby family and I can get a new WRX. No she is not a lesbian.

The Forester is just an Impreza with a meaty body. So, it'd probably be allowed. Heck, a girl autocrosses her S10 in Philly.

Just this past weekend, Chicago Region SCCA allowed a Dodge Dakota R/T to autocross. I couldn't believe how flat that thing stayed!

I tried to autocross my Wrangler at an Albany, NY SCCA event. I was told "absolutely not, NO JEEPS!" I was just going for fun, so I didn't mind too much. I do have an "SCCA Solo Events" Sticker on the back of my jeep

Don't know about the SCCA, but the Forester is EPA classifed as a station wagon(although it is marketed as an SUV).
How about one of these bad boys in an autocross? STi tuned with a 240ps EJ20 Turbo! [This message has been edited by Ken S (edited October 28, 2000).] |

You wanna autocross a Forester, go for it! But, if you're serious about being competitive in autocross, it's best to search through the results of the previous years nationals to get an idea of which cars are competitive in each of the classes.
Not practicing what I preach, I've been running my Impreza L 1.8 liter pretty much uncontested in H-stock. It's not much fun running alone. If I run an index class, I get my butt kicked because the 1.8L is not competitive in H-stock. H-stock is the bottom class, so there's a wide variation in performance within that class. Rallycross on the other hand, is a different story. In my first ever Rallycross, I did pretty good against 2.5RS's, Galant VR-4's, and Audi Quattros in PGT! Subie Gal: The Forester didn't run in PGT, what class was it in? |

Go for it. There is really no way SCCA can ban any particular class of cars, being as they allow most anything in rally. SO if they are not worried about stablity there why should they be on a more consistant surface, and slower speeds.
The Forester might be very good, due to it being in a POS class, with good power, little extra wieght over the 2.5RS, and much better wieght balance. |

Technically, it's a wagon (by EPA standards), so you probably could race one. The catch is the track stewards may not let you on. Plus, mine has fender flares and bigger wheels/tires, so it sits an inch higher.
You guys would be surprised, plenty of Forester owners do go off road. Just check out the Yahoo Forester club: http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/subaruforester Go to the Photos section, then open the Stockton folder (it is VERY worth seeing it). Look at the "we have orbit" photo. Look like about, what? 6 or seven FEET of ground clearance? That enough for you? I'm also not a lesbian! A small group of us is planning on kicking up some dirt on a local farm. I've driven on the beaches of the Outer Banks, and "Sandy" was a champ. The stock setup is inbetween. Not high enough for serious off roading, too high for ideal AutoX. Great for RallyX and driving on gravel or snow, though! BTW, someone wanted the monochrome paint scheme. To get it (in the US), you need the S Premium model. That also gives you what is essentially the world's largest moonroof! -juice '98 Forester Project 2.5RS 18mm SPT rear sway bar SPT front strut tower brace custom cold air intake 16"x7" aftermarket alloys (-15mm offset) 225/60R16s H-rated fender flares (for rocks/sand) SPT short shift kit rear skid plate My links: http://subarucrew.homepage.com/juice4/page4.html |

I see those autoX/rallyX Forester pix and can only say "woo-hoo!" Oh man, I'd love to give that a shot. Between that and my Studebaker habit* it might drive the missus over the edge.
Turbo S here for '02? Make mine monochromatic black. Maybe there'll be a well-maintained black '00 S up for sale then. ;-* *See Juice's webpage for a photo of my hobby car (unsolicited free plug - hi Juice, nice to see you over here). |
