Gah! Cant get the mounting bracket off the Stock Stereo
I am currently putting in a WRX HU in my 00 GC8 (which has an legacy GT HU right now- got it from the Subaru place when i bought the car used for some reason... anyway) I cant get the mounting bracket off it. Whoever put it on must have been superman... what should i do? Can I buy a new one or should i go by the dealership (which i didnt buy it from- I moved) here and see if they can get it off or what?

Hm, it shouldn't have even come with brackets. The ISO-DIN setup as used in Subarus has a bracket on each side of the DIN opening(s) where the HU goes, that is screwed/bolted to the sides of the HU and then in turn screwed to the sides of the console. When a HU is removed from the car the brackets should remain with the console because they are needed to mount whatever takes its place, be it another factory HU, an aftermarket one, or a blank plate or pocket. Any of these would attach to the same factory brackets.
Anyway if those side brackets are still attached to the WRX HU they shouldn't be that difficult to get off. |

i cant get the brackets off the OLD stereo that hold the HU in the dash and the WRX HU does not have the brackets. Since i cant get the brackets off the old one, i cant mount the new one. Hope that clears things up... a little.
There arent any thread lockers on it either. I got one off no problem and then the other ones were tightened by post spinach eating pop-eye i suppose. Ive about strippled the screws so I am going to go to the dealership and see what they can do about it. I dont know how helpful they will be since... well.. they never have been helpful so we will see. Does anyone else have any suggestions? |

Oh, ok now it makes sense.
You can drill out the screws if they're stripped, and/or buy replacement brackets from the dealer if needed. They can't be that expensive. |

How about some wd40, let it soak for awhile and try it.

A little update....
I went to the dealership this morning- they were real helpful... they did absolutely nothing but strip the screws even more- I got there and i told them my problem and then the service guy gets out his screw driver and strips a screw about raw and then says... "well i really cant do anything about this" as i am thinking to myself... 1. dont you think i already tried to unscrew it- i didnt expect the screws to come about myself 2. thanks for making the problem worse 3. and offer no solution to my problem and screwing it up more So i offer the idea maybe i can buy the bracket from the parts department- he says oh yeah... and tells me where to go... I go to the parts department and the dept guy tries to unscrew it too- stripping the screws more making the problem even worse then before... and after some typing and trying to find the part number he comes back and tells me the only way i can get a new bracket is to buy a new radio but i should try those craftsmen drill bits that take out damaged screws- which i bought and dont work So after my trip to the dealership the screws are stripped about 2x as much as they were before and i still cant get the darn thing off. Tomorrow i am going to try WD40 and usesome pliers after i take back the drill bits that dont work if that doesnt work... i dont know what to do do you guys know where i can buy a bracket.. i know theres gotta be someplace out there or someone who knows... |

Since your local dealer isn't any help, why not try one of the online vendors here who are actually Subaru parts departments. They should be able to get you the brackets. A few are www.allsubaru.com , www.subaruparts.com, www.subaruwrxparts.com
There are others I don't recall at the moment, check the vendor forum. As was previously mentioned, I highly recommend not using any penetrating oil on the old HU unless you don't care what happens to it. |

Yah, I had a tough time with the screws holding my OEM deck in my bracket. Phillips screws strip very easily. I used WD40 to penetrate the threads a bit. I made sure I had a proper sized Phillips screwdriver too to minimize head stripping.
Luckily, I did get mine out! Good luck with yours! LaterZ! Darren!! |

look, this might, might not help, but when you get ready to attempt taking it out again, get a can of compressed air, turn it upside down, and douse it with the "liquid" co2. This will make it really cold and might be just the amount of CONTRACTION (shrinkage).
(lol, seems any suggestion might help at this point) I'm surprised those drill bits don't work, but can you just use a regular metal drill bit and drill through it? |

Drill it out! This happens all the time at my work, especially on Nissans. Use about a 3/16" drill bit and drill the screw.

ok... a little update... i got one of the brackets off but not the other.... i got a couple of questions.... 1. how does one drill a screw out? im a virgin to such an act and 2. if i cant drill it out is it ok to mount it with one bracket? this whole not having a stereo gives me a lot of time to bond with my car and God but i think they are about sick of me so... hopefully not too much longer

You drill through the center of the screw. Start with a small bit and drill past the point where the screw head meets the thread, then repeat with progressively larger size bits until you are using a bit that is larger than the screw thread. Once you drill through with that bit the screw head should come off. With the screw heads removed in this manner you will be able to remove the bracket, and the remaining screw threads will turn out by hand easily.
Make sure the bits you use are sharp and take it easy with the drill, keep the speed down and don't push too hard. |
