Angry Rant Time: Got my first speeding ticket

Last Friday, after 8 years of driving and close to 300k safe (well, two minor accidents within 18 months of getting my license), ticket free miles, I got a ticket. I was doing 83 in a 75 and got caught (~$45 dollar total fine). I won't deny I was speeding (as defined by "breaking the speed limit"), and I don't really care about the money. However, I deny my driving was dangerous. And isn't that supposed to be the reasoning behind speed limits? Slower=safer? Anyway, traffic was light, I wasn't tailgating, I watch my mirrors, use my signals, my car is in perfect running order, etc, etc.. The State Patrolman pulls me over, 5 minutes later I'm on my way. Thank you, come again. Gee, speeding tickets aren't really for revenue generation? Coulda fooled me. $45 for 10 minutes worth of work seems like a pretty good rate to me.... Which brings me to my rant.

Hey, let's talk on our cell phones. Eat a Big Mac. Don't pay a lick of attention to the road while driving your 7000 pound SUV. Read the freaking newspaper, ANYTHING. Just DON'T YOU DARE BREAK THE SPEED LIMIT!!!. What is wrong with people in this country? I can't begin to count the number of times I've seen someone do something non-"speeding" related but dangerous or just plain stupid behind the wheel and have the cops look the other way. Like the time I passed a lady who was tailgating a semi. She was reading a book, and didn't know that there were big pieces of rebar hanging off the end of the trailer less than two feet from her windshield!!! Too bad the the semi didn't brake suddenly and take her out of the gene pool.
[edit]Forgot to mention that there was a cop immediately in front of me who witnessed this woman's actions.[/edit]

Why are politicians and the public so fixated on absolute speed and not the real dangers of the road? The problem, in my view, is the lack of respect for the act of driving that has been allowed to flourish in this country. If we went to stringent driver training and testing, I believe we could then get rid of speed limits and free up our fine (don't get me wrong; I have a lot of respect for most cops) police force to enforce the dangerous driving laws that are already on the books and deal with other, real crimes. But that'll never happen. Speeding tickets are just too easy money.

I plan on taking this to court. I can't in good conscience plead not guilty, as I know I was, but why should I waive my right to a fair trial? If the cop doesn't show, I'm off the hook.

Well, sorry this ended up so long. I'm just a bit upset at the state of things these days.

I am going to have to agree completely with you. Cops should only give tickets if people are terribly exceeding the speed limit or doing something definitely dangerous, like swerving and weaving or racing. Its not going to happen, though. Things just keep going more and more downhilll as time goes on. Sorry about the ticket, man. BTW, if the cop doesn't show that doesn't mean you are off the hook, at least here in FL.

Yeah, so? Pay your $45 and write a well-thought out non-rant to your congressman. There are some small towns that derive major portions of their annual budget from speeding ticket revenue.

My only speeding ticket was 72 in a 55. I was going ~63 in the far left lane and see a car come screaming up behind me, so I tapped the gas ('88 z28) and merged over like a courteous driver. Surprise, surprise it's a trooper.

Politicians are not concerned with solving problems, they are concerned with preserving thier jobs. We live with a catch phrase, simple solution mentality. Speed Kills, Guns Kill, Just say no! etc, etc, etc.

Either we don't have the attention span to focus on the real problems, or the politicians underestimate us and think we can be tricked with catch phrases, sound bites and quick fixes. They may be right judging by the behaviour of most Americans. Unfortunately we can't drag peoples heads out of thier arses.

Trust me ..truth is.. politicians dont give a flying **** about your speeding ticket..
just try to fight it in court, but sometimes it's better just to pay it off (u loose like 5-6 hours of work instead of court) Politicians care about you... only when it's voting season.

Good luck beachbum..
and remember my hitman duties are still available ..

A speeding ticket is sometimes just a tax on the privelege of driving. It would be easier if they included a box on your 1040 Tax Form: Miles driven = X, multilply X by Y% and that equals Z. Pay Z. Thank you, and we will see you next year.

I just went through a four hour refresher course for defensive driving (required to drive a State Vehicle). I was shocked when Triple A stated that speed alone does not kill. They mentioned this several times. What they harped on was inattentiveness. I do believe they got it right.

Um, in Canada, you can be pulled over for doing anything but driving. Usually if I get a cell call, I pull over to the shoulder with the 4-ways on and have the conversation. I have seen people, eating, reading, typing on there laptops, screaming into their cell phones, singing like maniacs, its insane. Talking on your cellphone while driving (in certain driving conditions) should result in a ticket.
