Exclamation Rubbing Sound Making Left Turns

I just started noticing this weekend a kind of "whooshing" sound when I would make hard left turns like at signal lights or pulling into parking spaces. I tried looking to see if I could see anything when I pulled into a parking spot, but saw nothing. Thought maybe it was a branch or something and was gone, but then I heard it again later. If anyone has experience with this kind of problem in the past, please let me know, I'd like to take care of it before it turns into a real problem.

Thanks,
Jon

Is the sound coming from the front or rear?

A couple of the more common items are either drive axle shaft joints or wheel bearings. For wheel bearings, typically they’ll begin making noise whenever the load is shifted between the bearings (i.e. turning left or right is louder than rolling strait). I recently had one go which I had carelessly ignored for too long and it took the hub with it. If you see evidence of grease on the inside of wheel (from getting spun out of the damaged bearing) then act fast and get it changed.

For drive axle shafts, you can inspect the inner and outer boots for signs of damage or grease loss. These are easily inspected as a tear or the loss of grease is very evident when failing.

Good luck..

Do you have aftermarket headers?

If yes, some headers come into contact with the subframe when the car is tossed around.

During regular driving conditions, the engine can shift considerably resulting in aftermarket header/uppipe rubbing on the subframe.

The Fix.

Aftermarket engine mounts (i.e. STi Group N or Cusco).

Not sure if this can remedy your rubbing noise but just my two cents.

I don't have aftermarket headers, but I will definitely be sure to check for grease. I can't say I noticed any when I inspected it to try and determine signs of wear, though my car is really dirty right now since I was away, so I may not have noticed.

Thanks,
Jon

No, that's what I was checking first and going to check again. They're 18x7.5 5Zigen FN01R-C with 225/40/18 Falken's on them. Never had the problem before this weekend though and the last time the tires were off the car was in March.

Check the tires for wear indication. Something could have started rubbing (fender liner come loose, or something like that.
