Default Loving my Impreza w/ VDC + Hill climb DISABLED.

I know I should have gone STI but I was a poor man.

Mine is a 2009 2.5i 4 door and ever since the first start up, I've hated the extra 3 seconds of stillness on an up/down hill. All this year and a half, I was trying to get my 2.5i to actually listen to my command, and after that year and a half.........

I was finally able to permanently disable VDC and HCA (Hill Climb Assist).

It worried me a bit because traditional fuse pulling method leaves most of the safety systems disabled as well...

Well, I finally figured another way to disable VDC and HCA, yet still retaining EBD and ABS. Not so sure about the TSC though...

Anyway, the HCA and VDC are finally OFF and now I'm really enjoying the car! I can confidently DIVE into corners now!

I've always wished it were an STI... now I won't trade the world for my 2.5i

Next stop, F+R sway bars.

curious how you have permenantly disabled it.

I don't know about the 2.5i but the STI can disable HCA easily 09+ that is, if you look in the manual.

and I know on my wifes forester you can disable VDC with a button on the dash lower left hand side of steering wheel.

I hope you didn't pull any fuses to do this?

Yeah, I know on the STI, you can put the VDC to third mode with the button to disable HCA but 2.5i and WRX has only two modes, neither disables HCA. The button only disables VDC and that annoying HCA still kicks in.

On an uphill I can stand it but backing up the downhill, it never really releases the brake until after about 3 seconds even if you give it gas.

And no, I did not pull any fuses.

I was reading the service manual(over 3000 pages!!) and decided to bypass the yaw and G sensor since HCA utilizes longitudinal G sensor and the major component of the VDC which prevents from hard cornering is the latitudinal G sensor.

I'm yet to figure out what the side effects are, but if I sense something is not right, I'll revert back to factory set up.

I wish I could add VDC to my 2.5i because front and rear open diffs and no VDC sucks.

I wonder if your AWD system will be messed up as without VDC controlling distribution of power you'll be stuck with your open diffs doing 1 wheel peels so to speak?

It's funny that the 2009 service manual mentions nothing about VTD except in the glossary.

I'm not sure if it will be messed up, but on this one I'll have to trust the legacy guys.

One thing I read though, is that VTD-AWD is only on 4EAT or 5EAT, but not on 5MT. Instead, 5MT has the viscous-coupled center differential. So I think VTD is missing on 5MT.

___

Found this in the legacy forum....

3. Variable Torque Distribution (VTD):

It has the MPT (multi plate transfer) clutch aka VTC as found in the Active AWD system but it also has a planetary-type center differential and a Rear LSD. The center differential provides the ability to have a default torque split of 45/55 front/rear (as against the 90/10 split in Active AWD). In every other aspect it is similar to the Active AWD in that it anticipates wheel slippage instead of reacting to it as in the case of a MT. We can say the the VTD is an advanced Active AWD system

Available with 4EAT on Impreza WRX
Available with 5EAT on Outback XT, Outback 3.0R, Legacy GT

...

So again which system is the best? I would say the order could be as follows:

  1. DCCD with Front and Rear LSDs - WRX Sti
  2. VTD - 4EAT on WRX and 5EAT on Outback XT, Outback 3.0R and Legacy GT
  3. Active AWD with Rear LSD: 4EAT on Outback 2.5i
  4. Tie. Depends on what you need more? proactive AWD system or the Rear LSD (if offroading)
    • Active AWD without Rear LSD: 4EAT on Impreza 2.5i, Legacy 2.5i and Legacy 2.5i Ltd
    • Continuous AWD with Rear LSD: 5MT on WRX, Legacy GT, Outback 2.5i, Outback XT and 6MT on spec.B
  5. Continuous AWD without Rear LSD: 5MT on Impreza 2.5i and Legacy 2.5i
( http://legacygt.com/forums/showthrea...mpt-48112.html )

So I guess my 'super inferior' *sniff* AWD system on my 5MT is not affected?

Fixed that for you james.

The VDC doesn't really do anything but cut throttle and brake wheels independently to keep you straight. There is nothing like coming around a corner and having the rear break loose a little, and the VDC decides to brake the outside front wheel, understeering you towards the barrier on the outside of the corner.
