I know very little about the plastic vs. aluminum intake argument, so I'll sit back for now, too.

My wife and I took a spin in two '07 cars, an Outback H-6 (which has a *lot* more grunt than her '01 version, wow!!!) and a Tribeca. She still likes the Outback better. Tribeca's interior was great, but she didn't like the handling or the appearance.

I agree that it's nice to have a car that looks great from the factory, but I've seen very few cars that satisfy that need, for me. I think if you want that, you've got to get in to BMW ///M or Audi S territory, that kind of thing. STI arguably, but a lot of people don't like the big wings and stuff.

Otherwise, you're talking about commuter cars, some of which have a performance advantage. Like the WRX. I mean, lots of people pine after the GC-series cars, still, for example. I still have my '00 RS, I love it to death...
But the classic Impreza, before the STi came out, was a pretty freakin' boring coupe/sedan/wagon. Add some big foglights, a new bumper, spoilers, a hood scoop.....

...and eventually you end up with the 22B. I don't know... point being, judgment on this car's longevity and appeal simply cannot be made, based upon first-year production shots.

Chris,

Well it looks like the Tribeca HVAC will fit in the dial spaces, so that is probably to come in a few years. After having rented quite a few cars with electronic HVAC controls in my travels, I feel like that is a creature comfort that my next car should have.

I'll have to look into the plastic intake. I certainly wouldn't recommend it for industrial diesel gensets, but I think those tend to run a bit hotter than our car engines.

Car styling is highly subjective, and it seems that you do pay for it. I do like the looks of all Ferraris, most Porsches, the 350Z, and the M Series BMWs out of the box. Of course, I really can only afford the 350Z out of those, I just have to question the practicality of it (maybe if I keep my WRX too). I remember when the "New Age" Impreza was released (seems like yesterday) and everyone was up in arms because it was so different than the first generation, which had evolved into a very aggressive looking car from the very first bare-bones Imprezas, which looked like the Geo Prisms/Toyota Corollas of the day. Back in those days I would have laughed at anyone that told me I would be driving a Subaru (and would own two).

Time will tell. I'm probably going to hold out from purchasing a new car until the new STi is revealed. In the meantime, I 'll continue to enjoy driving my bugeye.

It is steel, hence the new hood struts used to open it.

Paul,

Thanks for the reply. Yeah the hood is steel, which is disappointing, but I have a comment in Subie Gal's photo thread, here, in response to that and other points:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...&postcount=345

I think the aluminum hood may well be standard, still, for the JDM cars. And could still come with the STI, as an exclusive bit. If so, that means hood swaps will still occur. And the WRX may get it back, if costs even out, in a year or two anyway.

It just appears, as I stated in that URL, that Subaru evened out some costs in order to improve the major points they were focusing on. I'm more than willing to sacrifice, for example, a few pounds in the hood (which is easy to swap, or, as you said, there's now hood struts), for a double-wishbone rear suspension.

You guys want to know how much I dislike the 08 WRX?

I was waiting with anticipation to see the final production version, thinking I would buy one this fall.

After seeing the pictures, I went and bought an 07 CGM wagon this past saturday.
<====

p.s. I'm back in the game!

Good choice. I would hate to get stuck with the new hatch back once all the wagons are gone.

Because they're contracted with them. And if you think RE92s are bad, talk to the Honda guys, who've been dealing with Michelin MX-series crap for longer than we've had RE92s.

(Like the MXV4.)

And they actually appear to be an RE92A...

Oooooooooooo....

Haha, don't be fooled by the re92A, the legacy's got those too, didn't help at all. The similarities of the impreza sedan and legacy continue to grow. I swear the only major difference between a 08 legacy and a 08 impreza is the sheet metal and interior, the wrx is a detuned legacy. Why would anyone get a new WRX for 25k when you can get a Legacy GT for 25k and get a better looking car and more power?

If I ever decide to sell the STi I would totally pick up the LGT (or Spec B) as the replacement. Size of the car would be the driver.

The Impreza has *always* been a downsized Legacy, though. It's just that now, Subaru is bringing more of the components over. Probably happening more, now that they don't use the 2.0 in the WRX anymore.

Yeah... I had a '96 GS-R when I was younger. I stupidly replaced the tires about a month after I got the car w/ the OEM tires (XGT4s I think?). They lasted about two autocrosses worth of "I can't take it no mo" and got sold off for ZE512s

Oh man, they're awful. I bought my '94 in '98, I think it was. $7K and change, at the time I think.

I think it had a couple OE tires on it, and one or two mismatches. One actually blew out, in the rear, on I-95 in NC, as I recall. That was fun.

I decided on Bridgestone Potenza RE930s, in OE 14" for replacements. Those were very good. They're actually still linked on the NASIOC products page, from a zillion years ago.

Interesting "exotic" design on the EVO front end.

And damn.... I hate to say it, but.... the friggin '08 design is "slowly" growing on me.

And I have to agree, the suspension is a HUGE plus. But if it were suspension I was only going for, I would just get the Legacy.

After taking my time and carefully looking at the pictures the past couple of weeks I have come to the conclusion that it is still ugly.
