Default 2012 Impreza Owners - MPG Thread!

Calling all 2012 Impreza owners, post up your average MPG, average MPH (so we can see if you're mostly doing city or highway or a mix), and trim (so we can see if weight plays a factor). I'll start:

Average MPG: 25
Average MPH: 22
Trim: Sport Limited

Was expecting higher MPG but I guess it's pretty hard trying to drive like the EPA!

29 mpg in mixed driving and up and down hills. Hoping to crack 30 once the engine breaks in.

Over the first 222 miles I filled up (little topping up) and got 28.6mpg...I'll have to write down avg speed for next time. Plan on keeping track until I'm satisfied basically, probably a couple thousand miles.

When I got behind the wheel the car had 7 miles on the speedometer. Note the 28.6 mpg is including the dealer's driving/idling. The calculated number was also higher than the trip gauge number, which was 26.7 (if I recall correctly, difference could be due to fill up/top up, will average out over the next couple fill ups). I reset trip B when I got in, and that trip had an average of 29.7mpg.

Since the fill I've gone about another 48 miles and the gauge readout says 31.5mpg (reset at fill), while trip A (never reset) is in the 27mpg range.

folks, would it be safe to assume that current fuel mileage is hampered by the fact that companies or using either more less additives to the fuel (to prevent freezing?) and thus impacting the mileage calculations? I notice every winter my car seems to get worse mileage now we can infer that we idle more in the mornings but that can't be enough to significantly impact MPG. Anyway, food for though....

JTNY, agreed with you there, winter MPG suffers all around due to colder weather, additives in the fuel, snow tires for some and depending on the driver possibly idling prior to driving. In the vehicles I've owned (this is #12, omg, hahaha) I generally have come to expect a 10% drop off in mpg during the winter months.

It also appears that buyers of the new impreza are generally in the northern areas (not surprising since the advertised mpg coupled w/AWD are unheard of), so everyone is starting off in colder climates. With a car that gets such high MPG a 10%+ dip costs potentiall 3-5mpg, which is more pronounced over a car that starts with worse overall MPG ratings. We'll start seeing the true potential when our cars are more broken in, and the weather warms up.

I would also add that this is prob the first CVT car they have owned and thus there might be a learning curve involved as a coworker who recently brought a Legacy said she had to modify her driving habits to account for the CVT tranny.

Gas formulations are diferent in the winter and can indeed impact mpg figures.

Also, people should post the total miles on your car so we can see how "broken in" each car is to get those numbers.

This makes me wonder what hard data exists on economy as a function of road miles. I know my 1987 Honda Civic wagon did improve over the first 6-8K miles. I do not recall a break-in effect for the 2004 CR-V, 2006 Corolla, or 2009 Corolla. Don't be impressed by the list. These became kid cars long before I would have preferred. Still just a 2-car guy broke after 5 cars in 9 years.

Great news! I did 37,5 to be exact, even with studded winter tires. I was driving at constant speed on a country road, going around 55mph for 300 miles, without even using the cruise control! The trick : drive slow and soft hehe. I know it's boring, but going from 60 MPH to 55 brought the consumption down like crazy.
But my city average still sucks. I get 27.7 average when i include the city driving, which I would say counts for about 30% of what I do.

Like pretty much any car it is going to take a feather foot, ideal conditions and constant attention to attain good MPG. It is also going to vary widely simply because the perception of losing 20% off of 36 (which would be 29.5) is much more pronounced than losing 20% off of 25mpg (which would be 20)...random example, just to give an idea. The epa estimate does state 30mpg in mixed driving conditions as well.

I'm NOT getting 30mpg mixed though. =( I've even feather footing it too to test this. My '97 Integra got 32-34 mpg with a major lead foot. That was way back when fuel economy wasn't a major concern yet & I averaged that in winter mixed driving. Sooo... we shall see.

A guy I used to work with would get close to 40mpg with his old integra (late 90s model) with a stick, I know he didn't care about babying it either. EPA estimates are of course in the end just that, an estimate. It seems that initial MPG results are across the board, but not great either, I'm still optimistic that with a little practice, warmer weather and more broken in engines we'll start seeing better results. I sure hope it doesn't turn into my crap 2008 hyundai accent that couldn't reach the EPA estimates with a 10 foot pole!

Ew! No one enjoys a 55 mph highway run. I can't help but think driving faster shouldn't be affecting our MPGs as much as it is. I know it will effect it, but this margin is too much for me to swallow.

Well, at least 55 on a coutry road lets you open all the windows and enjoy the scenery. Once in a while I take the MPG gauge under the speedometer as a challenge to see what I can get for mileage.

Here's a link to my Fuelly profile
http://www.fuelly.com/driver/sleepnmnky/impreza

Current tank the gauge has estimate of 26 mpg currently with about 75% highway driving and zero remote starter use.

Seeing all your guys' MPG's makes me feel a little better. I thought there was something wrong with my car getting 25MPG.

Makes me wonder though how the EPA gets their numbers...I really gotta be a feather foot on the highway in order to come close to 36MPG.

The results on Fuelly is ugly.

Vant, the 2nd lowest listed number says it is a WRX which would be lower, the lowest listed MPG (the one below 20mpg) does not appear to be entered correctly...it has a first tank of 72 miles and 10 gallons fill-up! If you remove those 2 mpg averages you get 27.5...not the best, but 5 of those are around or under 1k miles, and the 3 with several thousand are on a steady upward trend as well.

That's what the "name" for the car is, but if you click on that profile it is for a 2012 Impreza CVT.

Also, I live in Florida, so I haven't had to deal with low temps, snow, etc.

On the side note, do you think changing into the Conti DWS will affect the mpg? I'm sure EPA tested the car on the most favorable conditions i.e. tires, weather, fuel, feather footing, etc. :shrugs:

Southeast - I've got ~ 1200 miles now with Sport Limited. Last tank average was 29.5 mpg with 36 MPH avg. I had driven a little aggressive, but left my defroster on too much (which runs the AC compressor). Turned It off and drove a little easier, and got 32-33 from the avg mpg computation where I was showing about 30.3 - 30.6 when I got 29.5 from the gas pump computation. 32-33 mpg was possible in 50-60 F temps.

Warmer temps help mpg, along with taking it easy on acceleration until the engine is fully warmed up (which takes longer now w colder temps) and leaving the defroster off unless needed.

My first two fill ups with a 2012 Limited were around 28 mpg on mostly highway. My last (all city driving with short trips and during a snow storm) was 20.5 mpg. Granted, I do have blizzaks on my car right now and I know that short trips not great for gas mileage, but 20.5 is a little ridiculous. I'm at about 1100 miles on my car.

I don't drive aggressively and typically stay to about 70 on the highway so I'm pretty disappointed with the mileage. On my 99 Accord I was able to consistently average in the low-mid 30s gas mileage, which is well above EPA estimates. Honestly, one of the only reasons I even considered the new Impreza was for the gas mileage. I'm past the break-in period so I'm guessing the mileage won't improve much (other than when the weather gets warmer) and I'm pretty annoyed with Subaru for advertising completely unrealistic mileage estimates.
