Driving a '13 sport with a 5-speed and just 500 miles on the clock. I find myself getting very competitive with the average mpg readout - it's a fun game for hyper-milers. Hit 35.1 today but then lost it on the side streets to home. I'll see what I'm really getting on my next fill up. I used to get 36-37 on mixed driving with my 2006 civic, 5-speed, which many think was good for a mix of highway / city.

So after 1 year and 14000km I'm averaging 26mpg (9l/100 km). When I filled up for a bit of a roadtrip this week, the range to empty showed 630km. After driving 125km ( about 80% hwy)
It showed 720km. Average of 7l/100km or 33mpg. Or 40 per one of the queen's gallons.

It was still climbing as I drove before I got into more city driving. Not sure how much further it would go before I stopped gaining range but happy to see the numbers.

Fwiw my old 2.5rs with loads more torque and 300 lbs lighter couldn't dream of touching these numbers, best tank ever was under 700km.

I remain confident that at posted speeds in all but severe terrain these cars should easily beat the epa estimates.

I drove 80 miles on some of the worst roads I have ever seen, speed between 7-20max, shaken and thrown all over the place, all 2nd gear. Even in those conditions I got pretty good mileage, I think that whole tank ended at just shy of 35mpg.

Filled up the tank last night. Avg. for the last tank just a tad over 32 MPG. Have about 3300 mi. on the odometer. Car has CVT.

Does using 87 octane vs 92 octane make a difference in gas mileage?

My half tank this past weekend netted me 34.8 MPG. Half of that was going 65-70 MPH, the other half was 75-80! I thought I was going to take a big hit on mileage, not so much!

Information says it doesn't but results always vary.

I was reseaching the same thing last night before going to bed. I started out researching about the head gaskets in boxer engines and it lead to finding out how lower octane gas could be one of the causes of HG failure because of detonation. 87 octane is more volatile than 92 so it "explodes" in the combustion chamber rather than "burn" like 92 octane does. The benfit of using higher octane requires an engine with high compression and the FB20 has that at 10.5:1. The owners manual kind of supports that by stating 87 or higher instead of 87 required or 87 recommended or designed to use "Regular" unleaded.
I use 89 because it's E0 but I don't think I'm going to buy 87 for this car anymore if I'm away from home. Just my .02

The answer is ... It depends.

What "octane" does is slow the burn and prevent predetonation (aka autodetonation or dieseling). If the engine has a high enough compression ratio (or is forced induction, like turbocharged) premium would help because the burn is faster from that, but that usually is not the case, and if it is it probably wouldn't help as much as it costs more.

Whatever is recommended will give the best mpg, because if you use a higher octane some of the expansion of the burn is wasted.

That said, if you climb in elevation you are lowering the amount of air inside the chamber so a lower octane is okay too. Regular around here (over 5,000 feet) is 85 octane.

No, I explored a fire road at glacier for a while, and also took the road up to kintla lake. Huge dips and potholes everywhere, all gravel.

I've been on two road trips in my life that took me to and through Denver. Once from the West and the other from the East. I liked coming from the East much better! I remember seeing <87 octane gas while I was there but never bought any. I was afraid of what it might do to my engine. That was a long time ago.

it isn't harmful at higher elevation where the the chance of detonation goes down. my best tank ever on this car was with 85.5

Just got the final tally on my trip
3018 miles
96.3 gallons
31.33mpg

Most of the gas was e10
1900 miles were at 80mph
3 tanks/600 miles had an average below 28mpg

100% satisfied other than my seat not being comfortable all the time

X2 on the seats. Long trips are a little uncomfortable. I can make it about 300 miles or so and I have to get out and move around for 10-15 minutes.

Ya, our longest day was 780 miles this trip. The worst part is it is only the drivers seat, in the passenger seat I am good. My wife has no issues with either seat.

300 miles is about 4 hours, and about time for gas so that usually works out good imho

Ya, I'm getting ready to trek to Denver end of Sept. between the seat and Kansas I will have enough excuses to stop. I'm not sure which will be the bigger pain in my tail. I dislike driving across Kansas, it makes me tired.

I just finished driving with a tank filled with 92 octane with 0% ethanol and hand calculated 32 mpg. It's a CVT. I drove mostly highway (~90%) over hilly terrain and used the ac a lot. That is definitely on the upper limit of what I've gotten so far (5500 miles on the car) but not by much. I usually average about 30 mpg and I've gotten close to 32 mpg without premium grades and with 10% ethanol. So far I can't justify paying more but I'll give it a few more trials in the future.

Wife came back from a trip to Denver and Northern Colorado last week in her '13 OB SAP. She filled up on 85 octane with ethanol while there and when she got back to Omaha, the car was running somewhat awful - really rough idle and lacking in power. We normally use 89 octane here and that has ethanol. We filled the OB with 87 octane with 0% ethanol and all was well immediately (well within 5/10 miles). My observation is that if you are leaving Colorado to any point that has less elevation, you might consider a higher octane fuel that has no ethanol. Costs a few bucks more for the tank; however, will work much better.

Exactly what I do, even I leave I fill with a grade I normally use at home.

2013 Sport, 1200 miles on the odo, 5-speed, hardly broken in
Calculated 33 mpg with 440 miles on the tankful before filling up

I'm happy with this from mixed city and highway driving, considering my 2007 gave me 36-37 with the same type of driving. I do have to work pretty hard to attain these type of mileage readings.
