Raceland Ultimo review
I purchased a set for my wrx because i needed to replace my blown suspension parts cheap.
[/url] Part 1 Stock WRX Wheels Stock ride height Noise: They make a little bit noise when going through the motions of compression and rebound. Its more of a hiss but its been like that on other brands i have had on other cars. Other than that they make no noise. (I did add a few mm of tension on the spring.) Comfort: These are not track coils but are great for spirited driving on the stock wheels. I live in NJ where there are bumps every five feet. These ride as smooth as my car did before my shocks blew. In part two i will see if this due to sidewall of the stock tires absorbing the bumps. Performance: They are not track coils but if you drive pretty hard with your dd on stock wheels then these will make you smile. The valving on these doesnt seem optimal for the springs but as long as this isnt for competition then it shouldnt matter. The taller sidewall of the stock wheels make up for the flaws in the valving. Build: The locking collars arent finished as good as i would like to see but you get what you pay for. The lower mount is made of steel and well made. The oval hole on the mount doesnt seem to be very accurate at adjusting the camber as the stock strut. Packaging: The top camber plate wasnt mount to the front coilovers and the bolts used to attach them were loose in the boxes. This had me playing find the bolt and washer for a few minutes. Other than that the packaging me the standard. Part 2: On low profile wheels XXR 527 235/40 18 Noise The noise has increased substantially. The rear coils clunk on anything beyond a medium sized bump or dip due to the solid mounting. An isolating piece of rubber would probably cure this. Comfort They still ride fairly smoothly but having thinner tires has reduced the coilovers ability to tolerate anything over a medium sized bump. Its odd because i dont really feel the small bumps and the tire noise hasnt increased. They can be a little bit bouncy on the bigger bumps. Performance Thinner tires have shown me where these things are lacking. Compression and rebound both suck for any sort of performance work. The compression seems to get too stiff as the strut compresses, so hitting a bump mid turn will make the coil feel like its bottoming out. The springs arent very well managed by the valving. On a 17 inch rim with a taller sidewall these may just actually work. Conclusion Save your money and buy something a bit better suited for spirited driving if you are a weekend mountain driver. They are better than blown struts but not as predictable mid turn like a more expensive setup or even Sti struts with aftermarket springs. If you just want to be low and slow then these may be the perfect thing for you.

Invest in an XL sized set of channel locks... once the collars seise up and the collar wrenches are ineffective, you'll need'em...

disassemble them. anti-seize everything that's threaded on the bodies.
if you're paranoid wrap the exposed threaded bits with some overlap on the collars with electrical tape to keep dirt out of them. |
