Question Header and high flow Cat questions

Hey guys, well I learned that my likes to overheat some yesterday, and I also learned it could be caused by my Cat. Subaru Told me that running hot may be because my cat is holding in engine temps??? Well I plan on buying headers and a cat within a month or two.... I would buy Brullen headers with the attached cat, but they are sold out and won't be available for a little while... So my comclusion is Borla headers with a Cat from mufflertech. I called them and they said they can fit a v-8 cat for me, they said they have done that on a few subaru's and it sounds really nice and gained a few HP. HE said he can also give me a cat just like random tech's for $60... But I have to get a muffler shop to put it on because they have to expand piping and then crimp it in place. So Headers are about $450ish, Cat would be $60, shipping I figure $75ish? that puts me at $585 total plus about $75 to put the cat on. Any comments about this set up would be appreciated!!!

I think you should just get the cat and save the rest to buy my wheels.

Thanks,

I had some problems with racesearch when I ordered my random tech cat. If I had to do it over again I would order it from Larry Ganz since he is a vendor for Cobb and I have always been extremely happy with his service.

way too much, do it yourself... I plan on doing mine... Its pretty easy and straight forward. I like to ask one question to see if people are capable of doing installs: Do you change your own oil"?

yah, and one of my freinds has capabilites to a lift so that makes it even easier, and my freidns have done hondas and everything else. But everyone is afraid to try it on my car since the engine is aligned diffrently, so i was going to take it to a shop. Are there instructions online for header installs? cam install?i would love to do it, just heard my engine is hard to work on..

so what do you have to take off to get the headers off? no need to lift the engine?

no lift, it would be nice tho,.... just use a floor jack, put car on jack stands, and I would recomend a breaker bar to get the bolts off... and be prepared to run to home depot in case you break a bolt...

Where did you ever get the idea that your car is hard to work on? Subaru's are as easy if not easier to work on than honda's. I work on both suby's and honda's, but I enjoy suby's the most. Changing your header is as easy as unbolting the old one and installing the new one. No sensors to change in the header (like some honda's), just watch out for damaged threads.

6 nuts IIRC for the headers and another where it connects to the cat have and 6"extension handy too.

First, make sure the engine is COLD.

Second, spray some penetrating lubricant on the header bolts.
Let the lubricant do it's work.

You might find that the nuts are rusted on tight. The studs that attach the header to the engine are just that, threaded studs - it is possible for you to un-screw them from the block instead of the nuts. This is not a big deal, but if it does happen, be careful putting them back in (steel studs into an aluminum block).

Definately put some new gaskets in there. You can also use a high-temp gasket material in addition to the new gaskets (doesn't hurt). I had a very small leak the first time I put my headers on, and burnt through a gasket. When I put the new gasket back in I used some Ultra-copper gasket sealant and haven't had any problems since.

Getting the headers apart from the cat section was a REAL pain (rusted solid - yet the car was only 6 months old). You will likely have to replace these bolts/nuts. If you are replacing the cat section, then don't bother separating it from the header, just make sure you disconnect the mid section before dropping the headers and take it out as one piece.

P.S. I am still not going to help you put any performance parts on your car until you get out to an autocross (and run).

Eric- I want to watch the six flags one, then run the next one. I am really thinking about joining the SCCA.... Whats the website with the scheduale of auto-X's in our area???

also, I decided against the cat. It will bump me up to SP class, and I heard it does'nt make that much difference in the way of performance. Instead, I got an HID kit... After seeing Steve's HID compared to imitation "ultra white" bulbs there is no chioce, HID is the way to go...

So Eric, are you saying to pick up some extra bolts just in case?? What size, how many, where should I buy them???
