At the Track Straight Pipe Review

I thought I would right up a brief review of the P and L straight pipe, or any straight pipe for that matter. I am currently running a ported and polished vf34 turbo, catless hks up pipe, catless invidia down pipe and P and L cat back, NO CATS, NO RESONATORS. (many other upgrade, figured id just start with the turbo and go back)

First and foremost, I am not a huge fan of the cans on any mufflers, cobb, invidia(previous exhaust) or others alike. The straight pipe looks clean and subtle, but is understood by car enthusiast for what it really is.

The general consensus prior to buying was that I will not like how loud and raspy it was. But I could not be more happy with the sound. Upon start up, it roars, sounds more like a v-8, while maintaining the boxer sound. Driving at slow speeds and shifting early will leave you with as much turbo whistle as you can imagine and have you questioning why you had not done this earlier. Regular driving is hardly much different under 3k (compared with my n1 race) but anything over that it just opens up. Now let me say I am young and do not mind being 'too' loud, that being said, I think it is a bit obnoxious when you get on it. I plan on having my car for the long home so i typically drive conservatively and shift before 3 grand regularly. (I average 24mpg city)

Pros:
Loud (if thats what you are looking for)
Ridiculous turbo whistle
No cabin drone while cruising
Clean look

Cons:
Loud (if that's not what you are looking for)
Can be a bit raspy
Cops will hate you if you 'drive it like you stole'

There is no comparison to a open DP, I ran that for the days prior to installing this and it's just not the same. The extra 6 ft of piping clears up the sound immensely and eliminates most of the raspy sound that the open downpipe brings.

Yeah open downpipe usually sounds like ass.

Sometimes straight pipes can sound like ass.

If you want turbo whistle, you need to go rotated, blow through and just leave the turbo open. My FXT sounded like a diesel dump truck pulling away from a redlight. The turbo drowned out the exh. It sounded like it was going to suck pedestrians in and eat them.

If I was drinking milk when I read this, it would have come out of my nose.

The Mustang is already cheaper, its been over a year on the same motor. Sounds better, and is a LOT more fun to drive.

I had a straightpipe section made for my axleback (bolt-on) as an alternative for use at the track/drag strip/whatever. I find that straightpiped, the car loses lots of its gusto it seems to have with the Cobb section on (full 3" TBE). It sounds nice and all, but it doesnt seem to have the thrust that it gets when the normal exhaust is on. Do you find this to be the same on your setup?

An axleback shouldn't have any effect on power.

But a straight pipe axle back probably drops 15 pounds, good for track days.

No effect on power whatsoever. Correct me if i'm wrong, but you want as little back pressure after the turbo as possible when in comes to a forced induction car.

I recently put on a nameless muffler delete. The previous owner took out the resonator too. I'm still stage 1 though so I still have my cat in there. The thing is loud as ****. I like it, but I'm going to have to put a resonator in the midpipe again for 2 reasons. 1. I live in a cop heavy neighborhood that have nothing better to do than write tickets. 2. The drone is killer. I can't go down the highway without having to raise my voice in a conversation.

Yes. Turbos are happiest with zero backpressure. Its not like an NA motor that needs backpressure. The motor gets PLENTY of backpressure from the exh housing of the turbo itself. So you want ZERO (or as close to it) restriction after the turbo.
