Default After I filled up some gas, the car won't start

so long story short, i went to filled up some 94 octane earlier tonight and paid the money left the car for 5 mins. Then i came back to my car and my car won't started. I can hear there was a clicking sound, but the engine won't cranked.
***65290;i noticed that my fuel gauge went down all the way at this time

the battery is fine, i left low beams on for 5 mins and seems the battery provided stable voltage.

i assume the fuel pump is fine since i can clearly hear it actually "pumping" from the trunk. (i don't have backseat)

so i called the caa. caa guy showed up in 5 mins (amazing!). He used a hammer to start knocking on the starter, i noticed that my fuel gauge reading went back up for a bit, but the car still won't crank.

then, we used jumper cable to finally get the car started. Drove back home for another 200 kms on highway+50 kms on local driving, found the car acted weird on local driving. To be specifically, I felt the hesitation randomly during driving, it's like there were fuel cuts or something...

I noticed my fuel gauge went down half tank, which is normal, after the 200 kms highway driving. However, the fuel gauge went back up almost to the "FULL" during the last 50 kms local driving.

Finally, i made it to home at the end. Shut the car off, won't start again.

So, could it be the alternator or the starter? but why is my fuel gauge went up and down?

thanks in advance

you can't judge the state of the battery from the lights - it takes way more amps to crank the engine than to run lights

if it was a bad alt you should have got a 'charge' light on the dash - more likely you have a dying battery (can't hold full charge - or has a bad cell that is limiting the cranking amps) - since you're in canada CT should be able to 'load test' it for you - if you can jump the car again and drive it there they will also be able to test the alternator output

the caa guy should have tested the battery / alt output instead of just randomly whacking stuff

Agreed. If he got it started by jumping it then you have a problem with the battery or alternator.

thanks guys. I will try to get it tested today.

Anyone can explain why is my fuel gauge reading acted weird?

These gauges are electrical. If the voltage is varying or has excessive AC ripple then it's going to cause a lot of strange things to happen.

Test voltage with the car off.... 12'ish volts?

Test with the car running and warm, everything shut off possible... 13-14'ish volts?

Test with everything electrical on possible... voltage?

If you can't stay above 11.5v or so, you might have an alt going out on you...

It definitely sounds like you either have a serious electrical issue, or the battery has failed..

Just to add...the alternator diodes can partially fail. Reading the DC voltage may appear to be fine, but the may be creating excessive AC voltage that is then introduced into the system.

Don't go strictly based off the readings from a cheap-o multimeter. Remove the alternator and battery and take them both in to get tested somewhere ie. Autozone.

^^^^ Troof... My point was a simple quick-n-dirty, to let you know you may have a problem, before you pull everything apart..
