Sti ver 2 tranny and options to replace center diff (01RS)
Hey guys,
I was at the dyno today (dynapack) and we figured that my cars center diff is messed up quite badly. We couldnt get the front wheels to spin at the same rpm as the rears, then the rears lock and horrible noises are heard when we gave gas to make a pull...the car would stall in 4th gear at WOT unless we started the pull when the fronts and rears eventually spun at the same rpm. We know its the center diff, i had the guys form lachute subaru there tuning the car and they are positive. Anyway: Should I replace my diff with another 01 RS diff? Or do you guys see this as a time for an upgrade? If it is time for an upgrade, what would you guys suggest? Sti center diff? Also, im looking into a stronger tranny for a good price, and I found a ver 2 STi tranny for 1,500$ canadian. The reason i like this tranny in particualr (besides good price) it still has a .411 final drive like my stock tranny, but (correct me if I am wrong) gears 1-4 are closer cut that on a stock RS tranny, giving better acceleration. I chose to not go with RA gears in my car becuase I have heard that the car revs higher on the highway due to the gearing, and eventhough I track my car every tuesday, I still need it as my daily driver. Are the RA gears so bad on the highway? Can someone with experience help me out on this one? What does everyone think of a ver 2 STi tranny in an RS? Anyone have one and would like to tell me how they like it? Sorry for all the questions guys, but I figure I want to fix my diff in the best way possible, and while Im digging into the drivetrain, i might as well pick out a good tranny for my needs as well. Thanks for any replies everyone, they are really appreciated. Dan |

the only problem I would see you having in using that tranny is it still is used with a mechanical speedo and you are electric. The speedo calble comes off of the tranny where you have an electrical unit. So try to find a newer tranny that uses an electronic unit.
Take it easy, Micah I have a 94 (EJ20 swap) if you decide to pass on the tranny could you hook me up with some info. I've been looking for a replacement tranny. |

If it is a real V2 Sti RA , it is a 3.90 final drive. Plus, it would have the EMCD center diff. And it is not practical for everyday driving because of the close ratios. 5th gear is almost 1:1 so to do 100kmph , you would rev about 3700 rpm.
As for the mechanical speedo cable, you can remove the mechanical part off the gearbox and put in the electronic sensor. They both are mechanically triggered. |

Well, it doesnt seem to hear to get around the speedo problem. If an RA gear set is that short on the highway, then its not for me. I guess the STi ver2 tranny might be the best way to go. The price Iwas given is 1,500 CAD...is that a good price form what you guys know?
Also, what would be the best replacement diff then? Maybe just stick with stock or is it worth the extra $ to go with STi? It would probably help in the winter as well. Thanks for the replies guys...keep em commin! HomemadeWRX- Ill let you know about the tranny if I go with something else. Thanks again guys, Dan |

Chris! Its the first time I have ever seen you post on here!
Anyway, i think i might get an STi diff and the STi ver 2 tranny, but I need a different clutch for the tranny I was told, so I going to use a stock wrx clutch until i order a new clutch for the ver 2 tranny...can anyone confirm this? Where can I get a clutch that works with the STi ver 2 tranny? Are aftermarket WRX clutches interchangeable with this tranny? Thanks guys! Dan Thanks Chris! Now go find me deals on parts! |

re.
I have never come across a v2 STI tranny running 3.90 ratio. Anyone is welcome to come and count the teeth and do the math on any tranny we have here.
Also, is it a 1;1 final drive or a 1.1:1 final ???? STI 2 tranny we have had in stock (all 4 of them) have been bolted into RS diffs without issue. Mark |

So you still have the 3.9 final drive? That should account for the difference.

Yea, well it's the fact that they are RA gears that makes them lower. STi Ver. 4-6 non R/RA gears are all the same.
