HELP! ball joint stuck
Okk so heres the skinny
Upgrading to the whiteline roll-center adjustment kit and everything has gone great but now I am on the driver side ball joint(last part to install). I was able to get the castle nut off, separate the control arm, took out the bolt securing the ball joint to the hub, & broke the ball joint loose(can spin it in the hub). The ball joint itself can move a little bit up and down in the hub (like maybe 1/4"?), and I can spin it freely but I cannot pull it out. I wonder if there is a layer of rust or other foreign stuff maybe in the hub(originally a east coast car). I've tried putting the castle nut on and bolt it back to the control arm so I can have leverage and push down on it. But I do not want to harm anything. Leaving it for the night, but right now it is soaking in the rest of my PB blaster and some liquid wrench. Anyone else run into this problem? Not the first time I've done ball joints but this may be the last time. ANy input/help most appreciated!

reinstall the control arm onto the ball joint, put nut back on tighten down. Then take a pry bar and pry the ball joint out by using the control arm as leverage.

Either buy or make snipers tools if the above doesn't work or weld a chunk of stock to the threaded portion of the ball joint and wail on it.

If you can't make/buy Sniper's awesome tool, you can DIY it.

That tool looks amazing. Might have to get that if I ever have to do this again.
After a night of soaking with liquid wrench and a little more motivation it came out today! All done and so far so good |

Haha agreed, I liked that it didn't dry up like pb blaster does. It was still lubricated when I worked on it 8 hours later.

did you try placing a flat head and hammering it in between the two cracks of where to hub bolt goes, and then using a pry bar to pop it out slowly? PB blaster does work.
i almost snapped one side of where the hub bolt wedges (whre bolt goes through) but it was a hairline crack and got the bolt through and tightened it down and no problems since holding my ball joint in place. |
