4th Gear Grinding in GC8
Hey guys
Well after 45000 trouble free miles in my 99 RS I am starting to experience grinding in my transmission when shifting from 3rd gear to 4th gear. This problem is not as apparent during low speed low RPM shifting, but when I am running at higher speeds and higher RPM I get lots of grinding going into 4th gear. It is really becoming quite annoying and I am getting concerned about my transmission. I have the 80k warranty on my car so I am not too worried about Subaru not covering it if something where to go horribly wrong. For now though, I am not very happy with my 4th gear. Any suggestions as to why my car may be acting like this? Thanks

My guess is syncro is prematurely wearing out...
My car does something similar too only when going from the 3rd to the 4th. I can't always duplicate the problem either and it happens unexpectedly. It happens at low rpm. |

Yeah the strange thing about my problem is that it only occurs at higher RPM driving. Also, it seems that once the gear box gets warmed up the problem becomes worse and worse.
Similar to your situation, my problem is difficult to replicate at normal speeds. Wondering if I should take it in so they can look at it. Although I am weary that they will say nothing is wrong since they obviously are not driving the car hard enough. What to do what to do? |

same problem out here in san diego, i have about 30k on the car just started happening after a track event, been doing it ever since..if i drive normal it usually doesnt do it but on occasion it does, and its quite embarassin with a chick in the car..at higher rpms seems to almost always do it...and i have noticed that when its get warmer it gets worse...i took it to the dealer..they said they couldnt replicate it...then they started questioning my 'mods' then they told me that there definately is something wrong with it, wanted to keep it for another day, then they told me that they were going to have to have a subaru factory rep come look at it because they couldnt make the 'call' on it. needless to say im still running with this problem grinding into 4th, and sometimes into 5th(when i bought the car this was already going on) my mods were an oil catch can, sti motor mounts. subaru sucks
