I was driving with my friend as well, breaking no traffic laws when he got pulled over and ticketed for an exhaust in his GSX eclipse. So, yes you can get a ticket for that. Also, that ticket WILL put 2 points on your lisence (in Mass), and raise insurance premiums.
Also, I believe visiondynamix is correct, both a catted DP and catless DP are equally illegal. If I remember correctly it is a federal fine to remove and/or replace a functioning catalytic converter. Also, unless the cat in those is a "3 bed" that can remove NOx as well, it would be illegal. Also, with any DP, it is very strongly recomended you get a tune, catted or catless. Which also getting a tune and modifying the OBD functions on the ROM is also illegal. Moral of the story is no matter what you do away from stock is illegal.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but my accessport, with a correctly matched map is sufficient as a tune, right? |

I've been running a fully catless system on my STi for almost 6 months now around the Boston area. Knock on wood no issues with the law yet. As for getting your inspection sticker it's a total crapshoot as everyone has mentioned before. I went to a few inspection stations that wouldn't even let me pull into their garage because they thought the car was too loud and I certainly was trying to be as quiet as possible when driving up. If you have no CEL's and the inspector is lazy and doesn't do a visual you have a chance of getting your sticker. Took me 4 tries before I found someone that would even look at the car and he passed it. |

correct, staties can give you ticket for "modified exhaust" dont matter wt brand they are, and you pretty much loss money on the dot because you need to pay to fight for ticket...
and yes, you can always pay someone to cover your inspection, as long as there is no CEL. i used to have a SE-R specv with header, midpipe weld on hi-flow cat, cat back, got pull over for speeding and modified exhaust, good that he didnt right me ticket for the exhaust... |

I THINK the Cobb Stage2 maps disable the P0420-Catalyst Ineffiency code, in which case, tampering with the OBDII system is illegal. It's damn near impossible to get caught on this one, though.

I'm just clarifying because SOMEONE always tries to say that that is incorrect interpretation of the law every time it's brought up.

THIS!!!! seems like everytime this is brought up someone has to try and "re-word" the law to make it seem different than it really is. If you mod youre exhaust in MA you run the risk of being bagged for it, simple as that.

I love living in Mass, but sometimes this state really irks me! If any of you have ever tried to own a firearm here you'll also know exactly what I'm talking about. Or shop for car insurance prior to last year... the list goes on. |

MANY other states have the same exact exhaust law.
I never had an issue buying car insurance for a good rate with good coverage. |

As for car insurance, up until about 2010-11 insurance companies all offered the same exact rates in MA, there was no shopping involved. Now other agencies (progressive for one) are allowed to do business in MA and are also able to offer you a lower rate than another company. Basically they're allowed to compete now. |

Kinda Sorta Not really. In 2008 when I got my car rates were all over the board. Then in 2009 rates were all over the board again with different companies in different spots.

I also 'know' someone who can pass me because it has catless dp, and he passed my stage 3 b5 s4 a few years back with catless dp's. Its all about the inspector. |

^ Just out of curiosity did you have any points on your record? I believe with a clean record they were able to budge a bit more on rates. Also, what is all over the board? Margin of $60 or less, or were you looking at major rate differences?
Anyway, I'm glad you got good insurance, I'm merely commenting on my experiences since 1999 til current and what I had been told by ins. agents. But dispute aside, I really like that LibertyMutual gives Subie discounts. That's cool. |

All over the board - $1300-2500 for the same coverage. I pay under $700 a year now through LibMu. |

Someone living in Southie and driving a 20 year old Chevy will likely pay more than I do on my Lotus. Easier than getting quotes all over the map is to go to an independent agent (like 80% of Massachusetts drivers do) and ask them to shop around for you. When you go to a 1 company agent, they won't look for the best rates for YOU. They look for the best commission for THEM. |

^ Yes!
My insurance jumped up $1000 just from moving from a suburb back to the city. Even different boroughs of Boston have slightly diff rates. |
