Default Deactivate Hill Start Assist on 2011 WRX

I took delivery this week on a 2011 WRX. It has daytime running lights. As I did with my '02 WRX wagon, I disconnected the wire to the hand brake switch and grounded it. This turns off the daytime lights all the time, not just when the handbrake is engaged. Apparently, this maneuver has also disabled the hill start assist as well. Which is just fine with me. I've looked around and have found no other work around, save having a STI where Subaru offers it with the car. Just tried it a couple of times, but it seems to work. Am interested to hear from others to see if this is real. Maybe I'm hallucinating. Downside is handbrake light is always on when car is running. Had the same thing on my other car.

So, I've been driving around for several days now and the hill assist is truly disabled on my 2011 WRX. Have not found any other solution posted on the internet to turn off the hill assist on my car. The only cost is the dashboard brake light that stays on once you release the handbrake. Any testimonials out there?

It was just dumb luck. I was disabling my daytime running lights. But what good luck. I hate the hill hold too. And I just got the car last week.

The hill assist can be tweaked in other subaru's.. It's just a cable adjustment. You can make it more sensitive or less. This is the case with my FXT.

Personally I love the feature in the hilly downtown seattle area and other places. I don't think I want a car now without it. It's something you can learn to work with and learn to love.

Unfortunately the newer hill holder is all electronic via the VDC. It can only be turned off in the STI.

The newer one is a little slower to release than the old hill holder, like it has to realize the car has started to move before it lets go where the old one was linked to the clutch pedal. I've totally gotten used to it. But you can't be the cool kid that advertises to the world you still drive a stick by rolling back a li'l before you take off. I can live with that.

I thought DRL's were more easily deactivated by simply unplugging the DRL control module? That's all I did in my '05 WRX. That would allow you to keep your hill-holder (if you so desire) and not have your e-brake light on all the time. Keep in mind that having the e-brake light on all the time means you don't know if/when it turns on for other brake system problems.

I don't see why they'd have moved it, it's behind the bumper cover (or in front of the fender liner) on the passenger side in my 2010. I unplugged it then just removed the module since there's no point having it just sit there. And I covered the loose plug with electrical tape and zip-tied it behind the horn.

Are you talking the DRL control module or just the DRL resistor? In my '05 WRX the actual control module was inside the cabin of the car in the front passenger foot well.

...and now that I think about it, neither lighting nor transmission/driveline have anything to do with suspension, brakes, or steering. This thread will be moving to the trans/driveline forum.

There is no control module in the newer cars. You have to disconnect the resistor, or I found you can snip a pin off a relay and take them out too.

I figured out how to disable hill assist on 2011 wrx. well i used an idea from a member on iwsti when i used Google. The car has two clutch sensors, one for safety switch on clutch other for cruise control/hill assist. The top of the two sensors is for hill assist and cruise. If you can figure a way to keep pin pushed down all the time hill assist hill never activate. Now i used a closed nut and adjusted sensor up a little to make room for nut. You need a 10 and 1.25 metric nut. now i have limited stores around me so i had to use a 10 and 1.50 closed nut and put a very small hex screw inside to push pin down and screw on slightly enough to stay on..

negative side effect is if using cruise control and hit clutch your engine will rev up. well if your smart and hit the break or cancel on cruise control you will be fine.

What about putting your foot in the clutch and at the same time shifting into neutral? Will cruise control disengage?

I like to choose when I use headlights. Same with windshield wipers, brakes, turn signals. I'm just old fashioned like that.
