Question Anybody ever had an amp repaired?

I've got a 6 channel Infinity Kappa 255A amp which I've had for the longest time. It has a rear channel blown out (previous poor installation) I want to get it repaired because the sound is warm and it had plenty of power to run my next project (86 300zx turbo).
So has anybody had an amp repaired and if so did it last? What was the place you used and what did you pay? Just feeling out before I either get it fixed or scrap it for somehting newer. Funds are tight (duh, aren't they always) so buying a new one would be stretch.

Well, to be honest, it can be tricky. Because of other issues that *could* arise from the install incident. Some may argue that because the integrity of the amps board has been somewhat compromised in your install, other areas may have been affected that could show up shortly after you get the repaired unit back. This is not always the case.

As far as getting the amp repaired, I would try to find the lowest price for the same amp brand new via E-bay or whatever, and then try to contact either a local audio shop or the manufacturer, and get a price quote for repairs. If the prices are closely matched, I would get brand new.

best bet is to find a local repair shop, i've had a head unit fixed before, home stereo amp too and it was relatively cheap compared to new, especially when you really like the one you've got.

Amp repair center (amprepaircenter.com) fixed by amp good as new and I really f'ed it up pretty good. It cost $148 so it's cheaper than buying a new or used amp. They said they always make every attempt to purchase the exact same parts (transistors, capacitors) if they can be found to maintain the original integrity.

I had a PPI Sedona amp repaired by a local small electronics repair shop. I had blown the power supply and it cost me $45 to get it fixed. It worked for another year until I sold it after that.

Usually, amplifiers toast just the output transistors when they go. Not always, but that's been my experience. These are usually, 5-10 bucks a pop. And an be easily replaced and returned to 100***37;. However, I've also seen people bake traces off of a PCB.

I have had good luck with all the equipment i bought that was repaired (or B-stock)

I bought a PPI A1200.2 (aka surf board) after someone blew it up. That thing worked the balls... wish I still had it IIrc I only paid $300 or $400 for that thing too... man I wish I could get another deal like that again...

I have a home amp I bought after being repaired 11 years ago. I still use it to this day.

As long as you take it to a good place there is no reason to think that a repaired amp would be worse than the original unit new...in fact you might actually get a better performing unit with better op-amps etc...

Cool fellas, thanks for the input and links. When I installed it with 10 ga. wire 8 yrs. earlier in its life I asked to much powerwise I suspect it compromised that one channel. I'll shop around and get the best price and most qualified people, turnaround time isn't a problam as the car won't be driven till spring. Very excited, gonna have it 100***37; soon enough...

Check over on ECA about finding a repair center. Just search as the topic has been covered a bunch of times over there already.
