Default Phase II SOHC heads on EJ257

Ive got a 2000 2.5 rs with a spun bearing that I am trying to get back on the road. Right now I don't want to turbo it, I just want it to be a nice DD. I have a line on an EJ257 that I was going to put the Phase 2 SOHC heads on and run it like that for a while. So the question is will there be any hurdles I will have to watch out for doing this? The only info I could find on this setup is in this thread: CLICK I didn't see anything in there about any complications, but I just wanted to be sure.

Thanks!!

edit - I am also looking into slightly thinner head gaskets to make up for the change in compression ratio for running N/A. Any recommendations?

what CAME on the 2.5RS was the THIN HG. Replacements for the 2.5RS are STi HG's. The compression with your EJ25 NA heads are gonna be like doing a EJ205 WRX head. Compression will be like. 8.6:1 or something like that.

Just plug up the breather in the back. Clean your oil pump by taking it apart. put everthing that bolts onto your block onto the EJ257. Once you start taking your motor apart, you will know what to use. Don't sit here and ponder if you have the engines in front of you. Swap over the pistons from your EJ25 NA.

can't swap pistons over between the two. They use different length rods. The STi rods are shorter by 1.1mm and that would lower the compression ratio so far, it would be a waste of time and effort.

we run the EJ257 block with those heads in our airplanes. The compression ratio is 9:1 and everything bolts up fine.

Do you plug the breather on your engines, and do you have a picture of the breather to plug? Thanks!

Bumping this back up with some different questions about valve springs. I figure when I have the heads out might as well do them since I would probably experience valve float at the pressure I will eventually run. THIS is my new thread that I made in NA to turbo, but it probably should have been asked here.

Options I have found for valve springs:

Cosworth springs sold by rallitek (I don't think they are the right height but rallitek lists them under 2.5l NA)

TWE springs, can't find a vendor that stocks them (Besides their website) Not much new (after 2005) info about them that I could find through searching.

Supertech springs and retainers, didn't see a vendor on here selling them but many websites seem too. I didn't find much info on these on the SOHC heads but it seems like they are used fairly often on wrx/sti DOHC heads

Ferrea doesn't list any springs that would work for the SOHC heads

It seems that the correct installed height should be 35.5mm, which Supertech and TWE definitely offer. The Cosworth website says that their valve springs installed height is 36mm @ 62 lbs. The Supertechs installed are 35.5mm @ 70 lbs so it seems to me that extra half mil could be taken out by a little more pressure @ installed height while using the Cosworth springs.

The reason I don't just jump on the supertechs is I don't know how reliable importperformanceparts.net is, and I can't really find any reviews. Has anyone ever used them?

Or should I just get measurements and search for generic valve springs?

- Mark

The supertech springs work fine. They use the same spring as the WRX/STi with a big spacer (about 1/2") under the spring that has a new spring seat machined into it. I can get you the part number if you need it.

The Ferrea springs that TWE sells/used to sell are direct replacements. I ran those in my car.

Great thanks! I don't need the part numbers for supertech, but do you possibly have the Ferrea spring P/N that was a direct replacement?

Contact Lightspeed Innovations in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. Since TWE shut down, the old owner for TWE has been working closely with Cam from Lightspeed. Lightspeed will be your best bet to get ahold of the TWE guys and they will likely have the springs in stock.
