Everything needed for a complete 6 speed drivetrain swap into an 02 WRX or 99-01 RS
Well it looks like I got a sticky so now I need to make this thread extra good. I am swapping my whole STI drivetrain from my wagon into my 2000 2.5rs so I'm including that info below. Any questions at all and feel free to PM me!
First off here's what you need for the 02 WRX: I can add more if I've forgotten anything. A few people have asked for this list now so I thought I'd post it just in case I forget in the future. Mine was from an 07 but this is the same for any 05+ I think. If you have a push style clutch then add in the slave cylinder. Obviously you can substitute any aftermarket parts from an STI for any of these if you have them. Remember that when you're matching parts the 05 stuff doesn't match the 06/07 stuff for certain parts, like rear diff for example, because the 04/05 has a 1:1 center diff making the rear end different. Axles are also different. The 04 is 5x100 so the list is different there, too. Here is everything you need for a complete 6 speed swap. The list looks long but most of it is small stuff. All your stock hardware works when reassembling. I pieced it all together for a lot less than most people sell complete kits for but it takes some time. I added what I paid so you can get an idea. What you need: 5x114.3 wheels - $700 /w crappy tires STI Springs - $200 for Cobb springs /w struts STI Struts - came with springs STI 6 speed - $3000 STI 6 speed clutch fork - included with tranny STI hubs /w knuckles - $100 STI drive shaft - $35 STI tranny mount - included with tranny STI axles - $200 STI rear diff - $200 STI clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate - included with tranny STI 6mt shift linkage - $100 for a brand new short linkage STI 6mt shift knob - $25 STI 6mt shift lever - $80 for Kartboy SS STI 6mt shifter bushings - $40 for Kartboy front and rear STI Brembos /w pads and rotors - $1200 with rotors and pads What you'll reuse: ABS sensors Brake lines All the nuts and bolts to mount stuff Optional stuff: STI Lower control arms (need FSB and endlinks also) - Paid $150 for the LCAs and another $140 for a Whiteline 27mm FSB and $50 for Whiteline endlinks STI Lateral links (need RSB and endlinks also) - Paid $140 for the lateral links and $50 for Poltec rear endlinks Aftermarket DCCD controller - Paid $340 for a Spiider Here is what you need for a complete swap into a 2000 2.5rs. The 98 is different because it has a different style clutch but this list should hold true for any 99-01 2.5rs. I haven't completed the swap yet, but I'll add on if I missed anything. Also, STI wheels will fit but with 225s you'll probably rub. Your best bet is either different tires, coil overs or a lot of rolling, cutting, and pulling. ALSO NOTE: you can use STI lower control arms up front but from what I'm told STI lateral links in the rear won't work, they make your camber go crazy. You can get adjustable lateral links or you can get the STI pink lateral links for the RS or just stay with stock. Stock style means stock rear sway and the biggest I can find is like a 22mm, which sucks. I really wanted 27mm again on the RS so I'm going with the adjustable Whiteline lateral links. ALSO: You'll have to do something in the back for the top hats. The front top hats are all the same from 93-07 AFAIK, but the rear STI tophats are bigger. Two of the holes will fit great, the third you either have to move the stud on the top hat or oval out the hole in the perch to make it fit. The best solution is coil overs. You can get coil overs that will fit the STI knuckle but have the top hats for an RS. I'm still researching this so I'll update later. What you need: 5x114.3 wheels - $700 /w crappy tires STI Springs - $200 for Cobb springs /w struts STI Struts - came with springs STI 6 speed - $3000 STI 6 speed clutch fork - included with tranny STI hubs /w knuckles - $100 STI drive shaft - $35 STI tranny mount - included with tranny STI axles - $200 STI rear diff - $200 STI clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate - included with tranny STI 6mt shift linkage - $100 for a brand new short linkage STI 6mt shift knob - $25 STI 6mt shift lever - $80 for Kartboy SS STI 6mt shifter bushings - $40 for Kartboy front and rear STI Brembos /w pads and rotors - $1200 with rotors and pads STI rear subframe that the diff and axles mount to - freebie STI or 02-05 clutch slave cylinder (pull style) - $30 What you'll reuse: ABS sensors Brake lines All the nuts and bolts to mount stuff Clutch master cylinder Optional stuff: STI Lower control arms (need STI FSB and endlinks also) - Paid $150 for the LCAs and another $140 for a Whiteline 27mm FSB and $50 for Whiteline endlinks Aftermarket DCCD controller - Paid $340 for a Spiider Coilovers! - definitely recommended to make it work perfect Adjustable or stock rear lateral links

When I did my swap I used that thread many times but it doesn't have everything and was kind of confusing for me. I just thought it might help some people to have a complete list of everything for this year including the little stuff and the optional stuff if you want the wider stance.

Remember guys this is a COMPLETE Swap.
Most parts are used as well. I will be putting up a list of parts i used for my 07 sti tranny swap into my 02 as well. Cyclops, i will PM you my list if you want to put it in your original post for those who don't want to do the "complete" swap. |

Yeah that'd be cool. I know there's a lot more you can reuse or make work but I just wanted to whole damn thing. The cost wasn't too much more and I did the labor myself so I figure what I saved made it worth it. PM me that list and I'll put up a partial swap list too.

i totally agree with the OP, the swap isn't exactly spelled out anywhere for the 02-05, specifically. thanks for the post. did you ever consider keeping the stock axles, stock suspension and stock brakes/wheels? i was considering doing an 04 swap, using the STi axle stubs, or buying an 05-07 and throwing in 04 stubs to keep aforementioned items stock...

What about the clutch master cylinder? Is it a good idea to upgrade to STI or is it completely unnecessary?

Yes, same for an 03. Clutch master cylinder is unnecessary AFAIK. No benefit whatsoever.

Question, which I am doing research on as I type this. If you wanted to reuse the stock DCCD controller, what all would you need? Having never laid eyes on the system, I dont know how "integrated" it is into the rest of the vehicles harness, or if its relatively stand alone like some cars' automatic transmission harnesses/computers.

The stock DCCD is totally integrated into the STI ECU and a bunch of sensors you don't swap in a tranny swap. If you want the stock DCCD controller you have to use everything. Aftermarket ends up way cheaper and easier.

Not that I doubt you, but why do some people advertise the transmissions as coming with the factory controller as if its some super nice feature if it cant easily be used in the WRX?

Honestly no idea. I know they incorporate the DCCD into the ECU, though. I've always been told not to even try to mess with the stock DCCD. It uses a whole lot of crazy sensors and wiring that would take forever to make work on a WRX. The aftermarket ones have everything and are way easier to install. The spiider is freaking awesome, too, with all the little features.

Will this work with a 99-01 2.5RS?

I'm actually doing that exact swap this month some time. All my 07 drivetrain is going in to a 2000 RS. I think I'll need a clutch slave for sure, also a rear crossmember for the rear diff.

Cool, could you post any extra parts needed or just add the RS to the list when you're done with the swap? Thanks!!!! |

I think can reuse the struts if you use 04 STI hubs... is that correct?
