Talking Where do you put your greasy ball when not in use?

Ha! Here's where mine goes from now on! Tomorrow I'll get some rattle-can black and go to town on it.

You only wish you were this cool.

  1. Go to a place that supplies professional body repair and paint shops.
  2. Pick up a can of SEM Trim Black.
  3. Paint hitch.
  4. Show to friends.
  5. ???
  6. Profit!

Expensive but worth it. Super-durable. Akin to powder coat.

1) It's not a nut. That's a Chrysler 9.25" axle and it just has a rubber plug.
2) It's not leaking, that's residual jizz from the 60k service that I haven't bothered to clean up yet, but while I was painting today I was going to hose it down with cleaner.

Thanks for the paint tip s.e. - I was just going to get krylon flat black, but I'll check that stuff out.

Cool, but why not just leave it in place? Knee bang hazard?

Greasy* knee bang hazard, and I normally run with the D-ring shackle in the hitch (the actual D-ring stays in the cab to prevent theft though, along with the tow strap) as pictured.

* I actually grease my ball every time I tow, unlike the vast majority of guys out there who just thrust it in a dry socket and call it good.

You should really consider slathering it with a high quality lubricant before trying to use it. There will be much less chafing between the surfaces and it'll make it last longer with repeated use.

Think you can rig something like that up for my hitch?

Yes.
It may require you getting a 6" lift and 37" tires though.

Austin gives me a run for my money, but you may indeed be correct. I mean, we both have lifted trucks, but mine has a welded rear axle, and I also have a roofless stripped 5.0, so, hmm.

Oh wait. There are several oldschoolers who are way more redneck than I am.

Gold bond my ass!

Edit: The dakota pictured above isn't lifted.

I greased my ball today before taking the boat out and also made sure my nuts where tight.

Let me tell you that a greasy ball and tight nuts certainly makes for smoother towing.

One stays in the hitch, the other two get wedged inbetween my crossover toolbox, 100 gal tank and the bed of the truck. They are almost always greased before use, except on the heavier trailers which are always greased. Metal on metal on a square inch or so at 1-2k lbs just doesn't seem like a good idea.
