Default IAT relocation questions

Hey all

I'm planning on relocating my IAT sensor to my intake manifold (recommended by tuner). I'm going to use an auxiliary manifold temp sensor rather than hack up an old MAF and take the thermistor out, etc.

2 questions:

1) what manifold temp sensor should I use? I'd like to just grab one from NAPA, but there are literally dozens. Does anybody know of a specific one that works better than others (maybe faster response, idk)?

2) where exactly do you think I should put it? Close to throttle body or elsewhere? My tuner said I could even mount it in my tmic, but I've not heard of anyone else doing that.

I'm doing a stage 3ish build with a blouch 16g-xt, 650cc injectors, and other supporting mods.

So, whaddaya think? Many thanks in advance

Put it where he recommends doing so...he is the one tuning your setup. I just hope he is a reliable. Why relocate for a 16g if you don't mind me asking?

Ya they said in the intercooler, which just seemed weird, but i suppose it makes sense for a few reasons. I'm also trying to make sense of exactly where in the intercooler based on my phone conversation

The reasoning is because it gives a more accurate, realtime measurement of intake air temp. I realize its probably unnecessary since I will be running cold air intake and it won't heat soak that much. But hey, I'm not one to refute the advice of the Dom

Thanks for the advice, keep it coming!

I was just asking Dom about this recently. I know he likes relocating the IAT. Put it as close to your TB as possible. The IC output flange area would be an easy spot.

I plan on doing the same thing fairly soon and am curious to see what kind of difference it will make.

Ya that seems like a good spot. However I have heard that putting it after the throttle body can help mediate temperature swings. Where you puttin yours?

Did Dom mention what specific sensor they usually use? Does it matter?

just for ease of install, I'll be putting in my top mount on the bottom of the flange as close to the hose connection as I can. I don't see there being that much of a diff in temp from there as opposed to putting it after the TB on the intake manifold. If I was running a front mount IC, then I would put it right near the throttle body.

As far as sensor, I was going with this one

Its just a GM sensor, so Im sure you can source it locally as well. And I never asked him, but the GM seems to be the one I see mentioned most often.

Ya I was having trouble seeing how the post-TB placement thing made sense. I have that exact sensor page open in another window hehe.

When you install yours, could you post pics? It'd be nice for me and others thinking of doing this in the future

Thanks for the quick responses

^nice, those are helpful.

One more question: Do you know which of the wires go to the IAT in the stock MAF? ie which wires to use for the new IAT

thanks again

I can't remember if it was here or on Romraider, but someone had been using a Honda IAT that had the same scaling as the Subaru oem Maf sensor.
The guy said he had it hooked it up in parallel (for testing) with his oem maf with a switch and had logged it at different loads with little to no variance between the two readings.
I believe the sensors was from a 98-04ish Accord. I had been planning to build one into my spare manifold until I was side track by my driveline swap.

As far as wiring, there should be 5ish(?) wiring attached to you MAF. IIRC two for the Temp, three for the maf.

http://www.northursalia.com/modifica...ng/wrxpin.html
This lists four wiring into maf, I still think there are five.

I'd be interested to see some pictures of your install if you could get some. You're putting the sensor in the TMIC, right?

There's a casting boss on the bottom of the manifold which is where I'm putting mine.

Yea I think I'll try putting it on the bottom, close to the IC outlet. I'll take some pics along the way

keep in mind that the GM thermistor is scalled differently than the stock, so I'd get it in and the wires ran back to where you will splice into the maf, but wait until your at MPS for your tune before making the final wire splice.

^good point. What I've actually decided to do is buy an extension harness for the GM IAT sensor and splice that into the MAF wiring. Here's a link to where I found the idea, as well as really good instructions for actually splicing the wires:

http://www.iwsti.com/forums/cobb-str...rt-finish.html

and here is where you can order the extension harness:

http://www.bmotorsports.com/shop/pro...roducts_id/566

Really clean finished product, and gives you the option to use your stock IAT sensor, should you ever want to

I just ordered my new sensor, so hopefully I can find time this weekend to install it as well as try my hand at adjusting for it

FYI, I found more info on the IAT relocation in Cobb's SD tuning guide. While the guide is for SD tuning for 2.5L engines, the IAT relocation on pg 40-41 applies to 2.0L WRX's as well.

waiting on my extension harness to finish the mod

I am envious of this. I have been slowly working on this in my spare time. I'm still not finished porting and shaving my spare manifold. Did you fab the bracket for the FPR, or is that something that's available through Aeromotive? Any plans to mount a fuel pressure sensor in the fpr?
