Default UTEC Install today: Log, pics, questions, impressions, thoughts, etc.

I was hoping someone could look over my work and let me know what you think. Does everything make sense because I think I'm a bit confused here. Thanks in advance.

Background:
03 WRX
Gutted Uppipe
HKS Downpipe
HKS Carbon/Ti
HKS SSQV
Necessary CEL fixes
Thule Surfracks - 10 hp with the windshield:d

Install:
Very easy. Directions weren't half as bad as some people made them out to be. The fitment sucks though. I was able to get one bolt to hold my kickplate back on. I dont know why or how this happened but it didn't fit back on well at all. The hose for the ABC was very tight and barely made it to its designated location. Once it was there, there wasnt enough hose to sit the ABC vertically as shown on the directions. Instead, it sits on an angle. No biggie though. Pics...

I installed the remote map switch as well. Install was very easy but it would have helped if I knew exactly what to do with the wires. Maybe a seperate set of instructions would be nice.

Uploaded some maps or thought I did. We left map1 alone, the ONLY preprogrammed map from TXS?? Uploaded the stageII base map from TXS in map2. Map3 is the stage2 plus uppipe from wrxhackers. For some reason, when we were hypertermed into the UTEC and watch the map changes, they DID NOT correspond with the selections I made on my switch. Map 1(switch) read map1(laptop). Map2 did not read on the laptop. Instead it jumped right to map3. turned the switch to map3, laptop read map3. After going through the other maps, it seems that when there isnt one present it jumps to the next. But why didnt my number2 map work? I downloaded it from TXS website and uploaded it the same exact way as the other one that did work.

The ABC....it seems to me that I have this thing maxed out. I must have turned it 5-8 times to acheive about 15psi. Something about this didnt seem right.

Power. I am honestly not all that impressed. It seems just as fast as the car was before.

Backfire: Just as bad as before if not worse. Not that I expected it to get any better but I just wanted to mention it in hopes that there is something I can do(besides take the SSQV off) to help. It's really annoying.

The log:
I havent exaclty studied other logs but when I noticed more then a few lean readings, I really wanted to check on this.

There's more to installing the remote switch than just plugging it in the back of the UTEC?

I ordered a UTEC. I hope there's a lot more than just installation instructions included with this. Can the sampling rate be adjusted? How versatile is the system to tuning? What are minimum laptop requirements for the UTEC?

Maybe I should just wait for my UTEC to show up and then see what I got myself into. I really hope I don't discover any regret over buying it.

The remote switch has additional wires because it goes the same place the accesory plug goes.(i think thats what im trying to say)
But it has wires for launch control and a seperate solenoid.

I read about the other wires for the launch control. But, as far as just installing the switch and using it, all you have to do is plug it in and mount it, right?

More observations...
-boost seems to build higher and higher through the RPM band. is this normal because it makes it kinda hard to tune the ABC
-my gas mileage is horrible. today i drove about 20 minutes total and i had a quarter tank. now i have an empty tank.

Good, because I have one in the mail.

Also, I don't think my mileage is too bad but, then again, I've only driven about 60 miles or so since I installed it (almost a week ago).

What map(s) are you running?
What are your mods?

Try doing a few runs with logger #1. I’d like to see your IDCs because I bet you are PIG rich.

From what little I can see you are 1, at low boost, and 2, running mostly in ECU timing areas.

With those two things in mind, your car is going to be slow.

Use the #1 logger and get the boost in the right place (by tuning the boost map in the UTEC)

Thanks for the reply, Nathan. At this point I am more concerned with the "lean" readings in my logs. I was under the impression that ANY lean readings are bad and can cause premanent damage. Is this fact or was I misinformed?

some random lean readings...

And we will be doing some more logging tonight.
I'll be sure to post those results.

Lean under decell is normal. Your injectors are typically not squirting any fuel in this situation.

OK cool. That makes good sense. Thanks.
So if I start running lean during accel, I'll start worrying.

If it doesn't say rich under WOT then it is the time to worry, if it says lean your motors days are numbered.

Definately tune boost with your maps and use the ABC if you can't get the numbers high enough. Most of us leave our ABC out about 2 turns or so. Don't tune with the ABC.

As for gas mileage on the UTEC I get around 26-27 MPG - compared to the 21-22 I got stock. You probably have some fine tuning to do.

On the remote switch issue, make sure on the UTEC itself the selector switch is on the "0" position.

Right now I'm trying different variations on the TXS stage 2 base map. See this thread for a log and my learning disabilities.

Mods to the engine are:

Lightened crank pulley
Colder NGK spark plugs
Vishnu cat-less up pipe
Helix cat-less down pipe
HKS Hi-Power cat back exhaust
Perrin short ram intake
Profec-B
UTEC (obviously)

Night2
-changed to clb
-adjusted abc to reach just under 16 psi
-calibrated tps and map(i know the tps is right, not sure about that map)
-logged with logger1 as instructed.
Does this look better? I had a knock in 4th 100 with 100%tps, uphill with hardly any gas(read this morning this is bad)

Question: If stock mode is switch0 on my remote, should I be tuning(boost) under this mode or not? I ask because we didn't. We tuned boost with a stageII with uppipe map and once we reached full boost, thought it was all gravy. However, if I drive in stock mode, I overboost.

You overboost in stock mode because you still have the ABC bleeding air from the factory boost controller. You should tune boost in the map that your driving on, not the stock map. Once you get your boost levels nice and controlled then worry about knock and such.

This is another reason why you don't want to have your ABC out more than a couple of turns as stock mode will overboost. With it out 2-3 turns you will run more boost than stock in stock mode, but still at reasonable levels - if it is out around 8 turns you are screwed.

Thanks for the replies. So if I tune my car in with the stageII map and my boost is a little over 16psi, why does this make my stock mode boost so much higher? Sorry, I just dont get it
I am still very new to this UTEC though and I was under the impression that I could switch to stock mode and the utec would make the car drive like stock(boost, fuel, timing)
As far as the knock goes, since I got gas, I have been trying to repeat what I did last night when I did get knock. So far so good. No flashing CEL

An ABC acts much like a MBC. By using your ABC to turn the boost up you do so for both stock mode and UTEC maps. The farther out you have the ABC the more your stock mode will be affected. It is best to have the ABC out a few turns and to tune your boost through the UTEC maps (either open or closed loop, although closed loop is much more consistent). This way when you switch back to stock mode the ABC isn't bleeding off too much pressure thus causing stock mode overboosting.

As for your knock issues a couple of things that will make you more prone to knock (in addition to atmospheric/altitude variations and fuel quality):
1.More weight in the car
2.Going uphill, especially in higher gears.
3.Accelerating in the wrong gear (i.e. 5th when you should be in third).

If your car is tuned on the edge durring normal conditions then the above items will cause you to knock. A higher load on the engine=more knock potential.
