Replacement hatch struts: factory or aftermarket?
It looks like the hatch struts on my 97 wagon are getting old. The hatch is more difficult to push up and my fiancée is five foot tall, sooo I'd like to get some new ones
Looks like the "Strong Arm" brand ones from Adv Auto and the OEM ones are about the same price, but the Strong Arm ones have a lifetime warranty. Anyone used the aftermarket ones? What are your experiences? TIA

The ends of my struts on my 1997 Outback wagon are seriously rusted, but seem to be still working okay.
I am finding that it takes me a good 3-4 attempts with the key before my hatch will unlock. Is this how the hatch lock works ? Am I doing something wrong ? Is there a "fix" for this ? Basically I turn the key to the left (lock, anti-clock-wise) and I can hear a mechanical "thunk", but mostly when I turn the key to the right (unlock, clock-wise) I don't hear or feel much of anything and lifting the handle thing doesn't work as it is still "locked". but after 2-3 tries, eventually I can sense the internal "clunk" or "clicks" and the handle works. |

Thanks Pat. I didn't figure there was a huge difference, and lifetime warranty is nice. I've also got some SubaruBucks bought at a discount, so I'll weigh the options and flip a coin.
Jonathan - sorry, can't help you there. Locks are still a mystery to me |

Have used Strong Arm hood/hatch supports many times on many different cars and have never had a problem. Would definately recommend them to you.

It's funny, my car's hatch struts have been bad for the past two years so I'm used to having to give them a little help to get it all the way up (they hold the hatch perfectly fine) that one day when it was really hot I guess they got a little "boost" in performance and hit me in the chin.
Anyways, thanks for starting this thread because I was curious too. Last edited by Frogsthatmoo; 06-08-2010 at 01:09 AM. |
