Good place to buy speakers and other audio system stuffs?
Hey all,
I'm looking to do a complete upgrade on my stereo system. New HU, speakers, amp, etc. Not looking to be that annoying boomer everyone hates at stoplights. Just want a kickin' stereo for me tunes! (insert James May video clip). Once I decide what kind of set up I want, where is the best place to get them? Or where around here is a great place to find out which kind of set up I want? I would have thought Best Buy, but I feel like a lot of that is generic or not really full of a good selection. Thoughts? Thanks!

There are a ton of good local shops in SD. If you want guidance, a good install and better selection than BB go to one of them. I would suggest checking out reviews on Yelp.
DIY, any of the above mentioned has the best pricing. |

Don't forget Amazon. They had everything I was looking for and free shipping on it all, with pricing in synch with all the audio shops really. At least for Clarion and Rockford Fosgate stuff.

I will second the recommendation for Sonic Electronix. Saved a few hundred bucks on the JL amplifier I bought compared to buying it locally.
Woofers Etc also has a good reputation, but I've never actually bought anything from them. |

I can vouch for:
amazon (everything - wire, cables, terminals, harnesses, speakers) sonicelectronix (battery, wiring, terminals, speakers) woofersetc (speakers/subs) hookedontronics (misc wiring) Haven't had an ordering problem with any of them. Have had a good RMA experience with Sonic. Same with hookedontronics, although they can be slow to respond. |

Used to be a huge audio guy, and always found the best prices at ikesound.com.
Literally spent thousands there over the years. |

Thanks for all the great input! Best Buy has a deal on Polk Audio speakers for only $30!! Thinking of jumping on it. Always loved Polk. But I'll check out all the recommendations you guys gave. Any note-worthy preferences with amps? I'm reading up everywhere on whatever I can, but there seems to be a lot of personal preference when it comes to amps and head units.

Amps are going to be dependent on power requirements and placement. First figure out what speakers you want to run and how many. IE: fronts only and a sub, all doors no sub, or all doors and a sub. After you figure that out you can go from there for what your power requirements are. Find the one that fits your needs and size of where you want to put it. For all intensive purposes though you can't go wrong with an alpine Pdx series or the jl hd series amps.

I got my new car audio stuff from amazon, but if looking for more expensive equipment it sometimes pays to buy used, speakers and subs are very easy to buy used since a simple hearing test tells you if it works or not. Amps are a little harder, but an extended 20 min demo should separate good used from bad used. My home system cost me about 1/4 normal cost by buying used. A big worry for used home speakers is packing or foam degredation, which isn't even a problem in car audio. I used Audiogon for some of my stuff, not sure if they do car audio, but places like www.caraudioforum.com have classifieds. Hope this helps!
