Default Intermittent P0325 (knock sensor circuit)

First off, car is a 2000 OBS, all original/stock.
So, like the title says, I'm getting an intermittent p0325 knock sensor circuit code. I had fun with this one about a year ago, and after removing, cleaning the contact points, and re-torquing it, the problem went away. At this point, the sensor was in spec. Now, after changing my plug leads, it's baaa-ack. I can clear it, and it'll go away for a tank of gas or longer, or, it'll just come back instantly. Or, sometimes, it'll come on as soon as I start the car, then go away within 10-15 minutes on it's own. The only real thing I can think of is that the wire from the main harness to the sensor has been replaced by a PO. . .and doesn't look all that well done. It is a shielded wire, and I've put it inside flex-conduit to try and protect it a bit better.
So. . .Is the sensor itself finally bad (I'd rather not buy a new one if I don't have to)?
Is the wire bad (please, please don't tell me I need a new engine harness)?
Or is there something else entirely that I'm missing?
Also. . .I'm not hearing knocking or anything unusual out of the motor. . .am I right in thinking that I should be getting some message other than the p0325 if it really is knocking, and not just an electrical malfunction?
Thanks in advance. . .

Replaced the sensor. So far, so good. As an added bonus, engine seems to be way more lively, but it might all just be in my head

probably NOT just in your head. knock sensor malfunction likely pulled several degrees of timing. i have the same issue, hopefully the knock sensor off my legacy parts car works better then the sensor i have now :-/

Can a knock sensor go bad, or read improperly and still not throw a code?

I've been fighting knock on my 05 Impreza for a while now. After ECM reset my IAM drops to .281 from .500 I've replaced the plugs, the wires, the fuel filter, cleaned the PCV, replaced the front O2 sensor, replaced the Cat's and still get bad knock readings... at least bad FLKC values and a bad IAM.

I have had an Intermittent knock sensor for two years. Always goes out before inspection. So I have not touched it.

Is that a bad idea?
