Default New in the forum, looking for info on 2k Legacy(wagon) GT

Hi,

I'm in search of a used car and I came across a couple of 2k Legacys.

1. Black GT Wagon auto with 110,000km
2. Beige GT sedan auto with 83,000km

I was wondering the reliability of 2000 Legacys.
I read some kinda head gasket failure problem in earlier legacys. Does this apply to 2000 models as well.
What other problems/issues should I expect owning a Legacy.

Thanks

yes, the headgasket issue applies to both.

thats about all you need to watch out for though...

hmmm.

How serious this problem will affect? Repair cost? How likely will it go bad? If the gasket is replaced, it won't happen again? or it's the design defect, it'll occur again later.

sorry for too many questions.
Trying to get some idea what I'm getting into.

thanks

its a somewhat serious issue...most people that have it go wrong only have it go wrong once.

SOA released a coolant conditioner recall, and extended the warranty on any headgasket issues on 2000+ legacy's to 100,000 miles(whatever that is in KM), so I'd check out to see if its the same in Canada.

I personally have over 60k on my legacy, with no head gasket problems, but a lot of people on here have had them go...mostly under warranty.

I think its about 1000-2000 bucks to repair if you're not under warranty.

good luck.

Thanks.

I'm doing the search myself in the mean time.
Can anyone confirm that if 2k Legacy has same extended warranty as the ones in the USA by doing "conditioner" program?

Oh, another thing.
I went to a used car lot today and checked out 4 Legacys.
There was a white GT wagon I took it for a drive. It drove beautifully and the dealer said it's got 80,000km on. But when I checked the odometer, it had 42,000km. I asked the dealer and he answered the owner of this car had the odometer reset by Subaru dealer at 40,000km That's why it has low odometer reading. What's that supposed to mean? I never heard reseting an odometer reading by any dealer. Could it be a new engine dropped in at 40,000km so the dealer reset the odometer? The car seemed to have new paint all around (I'm not sure if it was in accident. Dealer said "no" and carfax came out good.)

Canada gets the service program BUT we don't get the extended warranty and only get the conditionner free the first time if we are out of warranty.

As to the mileage the dealer might have changed the part where the mileage is stored (gauges, ECU, not sure...) so the car would restart from 0. I looked at a car with a new engine and the odometer read the car's mileage, not the engine's...

As a note, I bought my 2K L wagon last year in Montreal and man! are there good deal around this year... If you can wait don't buy before August as prices are much higher from April to July (people buying to go on vacation, like I did... ).

Bonne chance!

Here's the prices of the cars I checked out today from a used car dealer in longueuil

1. 2k GT Wagon, white, auto (the one with weird odometer reading and new exterior paint all around), 80,000km, $13,900 CAD
2. 2k GT Sedan, beige, auto, 83,000km, $13,700CAD
3. 2k GT Wagon, Black, auto, 110,000km, $12,900CAD

All looked good, but I'm worried about the H.G problem.
Those are the best prices in Montreal I've seen.

I need to buy a car ASAP, so can't wait till the end of summer.

this HG problem keeps me from buying one of these legacy right away. I'm still making decision.

I have a quick question.
From what model year legacy 2.5L is free of HG problems?

Another question.
how can I check if the HG was ever replaced? The used car dealers don't keep the service history of the car.

If you call the dealer they and give them the VIN they can tell you if it needs the contitioner or not. I have an 02 GT ltd with 62k miles on the clock with no issues. It is hit or miss, dont let it scare you away. In my research that was the only major problem people talked about. Compare that to Audi or others.
