Default Where is the WRX weight coming from?

Couldn't think of any better place to ask this. Move as necessary.

Why is the WRX so heavy for its size and engine? I don't get it.

I think it is also in the chassis. The new age wrx has a mucher stiffer chassis.

3085 lbs. is not heavy for a car like this. This is not a Civic people.

A base Audi A4 Quattro (in Euro spec) wieghs in at over 3300 lbs.

And that's without sunroof, power seats, or any of the other gadgets on the USA versions.

And a base 1.8T gti/jetta runs in at approx 2900lbs.

So the question should be:
Where did the WRX lose all it's weight?

You are as wise as the ancients!

on a serious note, I was shocked on now an AWD car so light could be so damn strong. The chassis is one tight S-O-B.

Is it possible to get the wrx to the type RA weight? i thought
they weighed 2600 lbs? but i realize their the older 2 doors models which where lighter in the first place.

Is there a type RA for the new gen wrx? later

yea keep in mind that an awd system basically needs 3 diffs - front, rear, and center....the Z06 weighs more than a WRX (not by much, but still) and its only got 1 diff

The car has bars all through the chassis... like in the roof. This is why you can't put a sunroof in.

If you look behind the glove compartment you will see a big round bar running across as an example..

exactly. For a car of it's size and class it is slightly light. Look at a mustang, prelude, A4, 3 series, etc. They all weigh more.

The WRX isn't an econobox.

I ditched my spare tire, jack, rear seat belts, some of the mounting hardware for the back seats, and the stock heavy exhaust. I'm well below 3,000 lbs now. I can't think of anything else I can ditch. Anybody else do a more drastic weight reduction?

The WRX may be a little "festively plump", but come on. For one like everyone wisely said, AWD is going to tack on some weght, the stock exhaust system doesn't help much (of course, if you want a light exhaust system you'll have to shell out the mega $$$ for a nice titanium one to really reduce the weight), some may forget this is a FOUR door car. So if your consious about your weight, rip out the seats (not recommended as I am sure SOA would would @!#@ their pants if they saw this). The stock rims weight a freaking ton too, sheesh, I swear mine are made of lead.

IMHO, seeing how the WRX was customed for the US market, I am sure that more metal had to be tacked on so that if we are driving 45mph and hit the front left of our car on a block of concrete sticking out on the road (just like on the crash tests they do), we would escape injury free Of course, who drives 45mph?

Lastly, has anybody looked at the power to weight ratio? The stock WRX is pretty beafy for it's size, so I would imagine this car can carry it's own weight.

Just thought of another way to reduce the car weight, try reducing your own weight More dohnuts = bigger gut = more work for the WRX to haul you around at the speeds you want

The stock rims are only 16 lbs. They are not heavy at all.

Let's see....start with the pure luxuries.....Stereo, A/C, power windows, power locks....then move on to the REAL weight savings....back seats, front passenger seat, truckliner, headliner, door panels, center console, dash....then a few trades: plexiglass in place of glass windows, aluminum and/or carbon fiber drivers seat......how rough do you want to go?

I took out the back seats the second week after I bought my car. It was just all metal from the back of the front seats to the back end of the car. Last weekend I put the foam part of the seats back in though because they don't weigh much at all. It looks a lot nicer with the seats in there. I kept the gray metal bar attached to the floor in there because it looks like that is there for stiffening up the car. It's not really worth it to take out your back seats. I weighed all the stuff and it was only like 50 lbs.

My WRX sedan with nothing else in the car showed 3080 on the scale at the track. My friends Zo6 showed 2950. The WRX weighs more than a Z06. Just FYI.

A shake for breakfast, a shake for lunch, and a sensible dinner helped Tommy Lasorda take 0.36 seconds off his ET.

I had a very low tank as I was drag racing... I would guess he had next to nothing in his tank. He was out for numbers... He ran 12.3 bone stock that night on stock tires. I was just shocked that his car weighed less than mine. The Vette is a HUGE car and its super wide.. Way to big for my tastes. But man is it light for its size.
