Smell in reverse
I've done several searches and have come up empty. If there is already a thread on this, I appologize and would appreciate some direction.
My FXT is my first Subaru, and it is awesome, for the most part. My issue is I have been noticing an awful smell when I am backing up, expecially up hill. It comes in through the ventilation system. I originally thought that it was the cat, it kind of has that odor, but I've noticed that it only seems to happen in reverse. This is unfortunately leading me to wonder about clutch. I unfortunately bought my FXT with a little over 900 miles on it (but the dealership guaranteed me that it had been driven under their watchful eye only ). I did however get an awesome deal, so I was able to reconcile that someone else put the first miles on it. Well, this is getting long and off point, and probably pretty unclear. Has anyone else noticed anything like this?

I'm guessing it's a MT?
Is it a steep hill, or do you back a long way? You might be riding the clutch up the hill. This typically gives off a bad smell. Some clutch riding is typical if you're moving very slowly up a hill. |

Do you come back from long hard drives when you're about to back up the hill?
It might just be the breaks, and the smell they give off when breaking hard for long periods time. You backing (i.e. slow speeds) could be causing this to waft into the cabin (and up till now you've been driving at higher speeds not allowing the smell to come in). ??? Just ideas. |

It's definitely not brakes, usually happens when I've been sitting waiting to pick up some kids. I've kind of narrowed it down to the clutch as the culprit as well, since you rarely fully engage the clutch in reverse. It's not a long hill, or very steep, but it's one of those places you have to back out of slowly.
The only thing with the clutch, is that it doesn't smell like any clutch I've ever smelled. In addition, I've owned a lot of mt cars and have never had the problem of smoking the clutch when backing up. Maybe it's just a Subaru quirk. That's what I'm trying to decide before I head off to the dealership just to be told I'm an idiot and they all do that. |

How new is your FXT? Miles/Months
You don't need to be smoking it to make it smell ... if you're moving slow, long enough ... it maybe generating enough heat to give off a smell. I'd get it checked anyway, esp since you know what it should smell like (and you say this doesn't smell like it). |

I've had it about 2 months. It has a little over 3,000 miles. Could still be newness. I guess I'll give it a few K more.

it's the clutch
ive done it it's a pretty sensitive setup, w/ the drive by wire, which is pretty lightly sprung and the clutch having a very narrow area of engagement... it's taken me a while to get used to taking off from a stop, an generally not overreving the motor while easing the clutch out.. if you watch the rpms when you take off in 1st you'll see how easy it is to overrev the motor frank |
