Default EJ207 Owners?

Ok so of the EJ207 owers out there who wishes they would have got a 2.5 and built that instead? I am at the point were i need to go either direction but i am leaning towards the JDM swap. I dont know what 207 i would be getting yet but I do know it would be a Ver7 Sti of some sort.

i had the exact same problem when i was deciding on my motor choice. In the end i realized the EJ207 is the cream of the crop. Built motors can have problems so I didn't even want to have to deal with it.

I have a Ver8 EJ207 and I love it. The AVCS really helps on the bottom end. I have driven a few 2.5's and I prefer the 2.0l (even though the 2.5 is stronger off boost), It just seems to rev better. My redline was set at 7,800 when remapped.

I can see a good conversation forming here.

The V7 EJ207 is 8250 redline, while the V8 with bigger port heads is set at 8500. There is without question no comparison between a USDM EJ205 and a JDM EJ207 in any way, ESPECIALLY off boost power. Variable valve timing is the king in this region. The 207's also just seem to rev stronger, smoother, and happier in every way.

I currently drive a lightly modded 04 STi (2.5) and my fiance has a 98 RS with a non-RA V7 with a V8 Twinscroll system. My STi is for sale because the 207 is just simply more fun in every way. Granted the twinscroll accounts for earlier boost, but it does not magically add any displacement to the motor. A 207 is hands down stronger at every rpm than the 205 we are or were used to.

For big power, V7 as you know has the forged internals and is probably the way to go. For amazing revving, go with the V8 and a slightly larger turbo (20g ish?) and never look back.

Go with a built and balanced 2.5l. Back when I did my swap there weren't too many options available for built motors and swaps and the price of JDM motors was cheaper. If you have to worry about emissions testing it will be much less of a headache going with a 2.5. The V7 motor is great, but there are much better options out there and a nicely balanced 2.5 will be just as smooth as an ej207 if not smoother. A nice option would be the Gruppe-s 2.1l high rev block that is a built ej207. That's what I will do if I ever blow my 207 up.

I have an ej207 and you'd have to put a gun to my head to trade it for a 2.5. The ej207 is so damn smooth, it's like butter at 4k rpm, while the 2.5 is rough. The 8.5k rev limit is like music, the only think you gotta do it get a turbo that gives you a decent reason to be up there.

Motors that are split and built often have quirks and miscellaneous BS stuff pop up that a factory motor doesn't have.

Like dug-e-fresh said... Torque breaks parts... EJ207's have made almost as much power as stock block sti's (soon2bgreat made 507 on c16)... that's powerful enough for a 10 second run with a good transmission (not 6 spd ratios). Soon2b also had much less torque because it was a 2L. Launching with 500ft-lbs instead of 400ft-lbs when you have 500whp can be much more detrimental to drivetrain parts.

Of course I am speaking with regard to drag racing only... where you don't exactly need much torque since you're in the upper RPM anyway.

I agree with his last line but for some reason I thinkt here is more attention to detail in jdm motors.. or jdm STI motors... rather than USDM STI motors... some have been disassembled before failure and have had pretty bad tolerances; even when n2xlr8n bought his brand new 2006 sti shortblock, he said the cylinder walls were quite dirty, etc.

I dropped my EJ207 (which came standard in my car) in favor of a built EJ247 just because I need the displacement and the extra torque to help offset the lag from the bigger turbo (HKS3037s) that is going in the car.

A couple of tuners here tried the bigger turbo with an EJ207 and the lag is just humongous that the car would pretty much be useless on normal day to day driving...

right now i have v7 spec-c w/ vf22. it's fun to drive. i just short shift around 6~7k even when i am spirit driving. i honestly don't really remember what ej205 felt like. lol



If I were to do everything again. It would be built 2.5l + v7 spec-c or v8 head w/ gt35r.. But I have never drove or owned built 2.5 so it's probably just me wanting to try different stuff.
ej207 are amazing. car feels more like EVO(likes boost, slingshot feeling) then 2.5(judging from stock sti i drove. not much, i know).

finding a person who have driven or owned both ej207, ej257 will help you the most. some tuners feedback would be most helpful IMO

I currently have a 2.5 with 207 type ra heads. I would rather have the 2.0 back to be honest. A V7 RA or V8 EJ207 with a simple GT30R.

well, I'll try and comment on this. There are going to be trade offs either way obviously. I went v7 207 because this car is my primary and daily driver. the swap took a little more than a day to do. I did not want to deal with the downtime. THe OEM build is just sweet. I didn't want to deal with the issues inherint to built motors since I put alot of miles on my car. capt said it. its soooo smooth. like, scary smooth at 8k, it feels like the motor isn't even trying. I have a green right now with avcs not working (I know, its just been spiting me). I would have NO issues going to a 30R with avcs and w/i.
that all beign said, a 2.5 that could rev to 8 ALL DAY LONG without oiling issues would be the ultimate, but in order to find something that could reliably do that, we're talking big $$. v7s do real well in stock form. the motor just runs quiet, it purrs.
in all, I would only go 2.5 if I could afford to do it right, make the car spin to 8, and have a powerband that would hold up there.
I wouldn't do anything different, honestly. I'm very happy with my setup.

I went the 207 route and after having that setup for awhile I wish I would have gone with the 2.5 block to start with. I went with the 207 as built blocks were having alot of issues when i was looking to upgrade and I wanted a nice oem smooth motor. The 207 is an awesome motor and is smooth but it doesn't spool a big turbo like the 2.5 does.

Something recently broke in my ej207 over the weekend so I will be tearing it apart when I have time. I am looking into a 2.5 block to go with the jdm heads. I should have a nice writeup to compare the differences when I am done. Most likely won't be until winter time when I have a break from school.

gc8 2.2 liter with sti heads and different pistons/rods is my plan. good torque rev to 8500- 9000 grand etc!!! the motor that is in the legacy like 98 or whatever bet with much better heads and turbo etc

I am running a ver8 207 with a gt35r (.63 hot side) turbo. Its laggy compared to the vf37 but when you can rev to 8000+ rpm its more than worth it.
