Rev match yo!
It's helpful to learn to match revs for easier engagement. Also you have the option to use a heavy shift knob (stainless steel) to add some weight to throws. This provides a smoother feel and seemingly lighter effort. Like others said, bushings help a lot. They don't make it less notchy, but you do gain a lot of precision and actually feel exactly what's happening. |

Rev matching helps immensely and is pretty much a requirement to shift quickly without overly stressing the transmission. If I'm even a little bit off on a fast shift the synchros pretty much scream their unhappiness until it goes into gear. |

Blip the throttle slightly or when you're going to put it in gear and it doesn't go in, go back to neutral, take your foot off the clutch, and try again. I don't have this problem with my car unless the engine is still cold. However, my first car with a 5 speed had me do this everytime I went to first LOL.

Im still fairly new at stick. But 1-2, best thing i've learned when driving the car normally is to just let out the clutch slowly. Definitely much slower than i would from 2-3 and so on.
Rev is always the hardest frigging gear to go in. And for some reason, everytime i need to reverse quickly, it always gets stuck |

Is this just an issue with new wrxs. I have 06 sti and if the clutch is all the way down first has never been a issue going under 10 mph same with reverse it has never been a issue. I will admit to a few grinded gears going into fifth when slowly shifting but with a little force it engaged no problem. I have stock shifter with just the front shifter bushings and group n tranny and motor mounts.

If I'm in first and I'm past 25 mph, I shift into third. If I'm trying to maximize the acceleration provided by my car in 2nd gear, I go into second pretty quickly usually around 2800 RPM.
I do the same thing for 2nd to 4th. If I'm past 40 mph in 2nd gear, I go straight to 4th. The synchros do take some time to warm up. I can't downshift into 1st unless I'm completely stopped when the car is cold, and the transmission in general is kind of uncooperative when the car's been sitting outside in 20 degree weather overnight. Pretty sure this is normal. |

Smurf's blood really helps out the whole shifting thing. That and hitting the gas before you pop it in 1st while you are still moving.
Oh, and the factory ss works. It's not preventing you from shifting right. |

Cold transmission fluid ( especially conventional fluid ) does not shift very well. Synthetics are less temperature sensitive, but shifting easier/slower when cold does wonders for transmission internals.

Double clutching and a well matched rev makes getting into 1st from a roll relatively easy.
Subaru's aren't alone with 1st gear "lock out" either. My 96 Maxima 5MT was like this as was my 90 CRX Si. Every G35 and Nissan Z 6MT I've driven is the same way as well. My Maxima and CRX were pretty notchy as well, much like my WRX. My CRX was surprising since it was a cable shifter and not a direct linkage. The 6MT on the G/Z is really notchy, almost resistant going into some gears. If you want a buttery smooth shifter, you'll need to go looking for FWD cars with cable shifters. Most every FWD Honda and VW has super smooth shifting. It's also disconnected as hell too. |

Well were not professionally driving. If we were we wouldn't be skipping gears but since for most of us it's our dd I don't see anything wrong with going from 1to3, 2to4, 3to5 or what have you. I personally usually go threw every gear but of I go with in second and am going 60 and coast your not gonna go to 3rd makes more sense to skip to 4 or 5.

They are a bit finicky in the first two gears. First is easy to get into from a start but not downshifting (obvious reasons) and second is hard to easily get into from 1st when you are hammering on it. Just a character of the car, the transmissions are not soft like an everyday car, they are race bred and meat to be rougher for the more skilled driver

The newer civics are actually quite nimble, and have plenty of power to wrap yourself around a tree. It's not a turbo awd car, but for a NA fwd 4 banger its not bad. |
