Amazing picture. I'm heading up to the Lincoln/Bartlett/N. Conway area this weekend for some good driving and hiking.

Great day of riding at Kingdom Trails. My wife cranked on her new bike. We were laughing at the Canadians in their full spandex with knee pads. Don't quite get that whole trend, but whatever. Riding is riding. Troll Scroll was our favorite trail (again). So damn fast and flowy.

VT mtn bike fest is at mt. Ascutney in a couple weeks. Come check out over 30 miles of great trails. Just rode it last night since we had a break in the rain.

Dude, Todys Tour. Although every time I ride at KT my buddies and I agree after each trail that we had just undoubtedly ridden the best trail in the system. Until we ride the next trail that is.

Took my dog out with me for a quick lap of the DD in Campton yesterday. Had a blast!

I know. It's a sad day. I've been to Highland 4 times in two years, it hurts to look at.

And I have too many cars...

This is my first year doing any kind mtb. And I have been having tons of fun. Bought an older used diamond back off Craigslist in the spring to test the waters and see if I really liked it. Starting to do research for a new bike in the spring.

So, I'm a complete noob to mountain biking. What brands should I look at for a first bike? Looking to spend 400 to 500. Possibly more if that's not enough to get something decent. From the research I've done, I think I definitely want hydraulic/disc brakes. Any input is appreciated.

If you are really looking to stick to the $400-500 range, you should probably be looking to buy a used bike. Keep an eye out on Craigslist, pinkbike.com, and check to see when your local bike shops do bike swaps (usually spring time). As far as any one brand, that is so hard to do in the MTB world. There are many great companies and philosophies when it comes to building bikes. I have been trying to demo bikes all summer to see which direction I want to go. Jamis, Rocky Mountain, diamondback, Santa Cruz..... That's just the tip of the ice berg.

yeah the XTC is definitely not a good first bike. It is the best though, 29er, 30 speeds, sram x9's, avid elixir hydraulic disc brakes. $2,200!

It is nicely spec'd for the price, but I'd be cautious about calling it the best. It's fairly easy to get into the $6-8K range. And if you haven't ridden an $8K bike, you should give it a try. I demo'd a roughly $7800 cannondale a couple weeks ago that's was fantastic. Full suspension with remote lock outs, full carbon frame, 1x11 drive train, lefty fork.

It all comes down to the type of terrain your riding and your style. What's best for one person, is certainly not best for the next. I know I will absolutely have full suspension for the riding we do here in VT.
