McComick place parking...safe or not safe for modded cars during show?
For daytime shows like the Chicago Auto Show, i usually take our company's sedan and park it out in the south lot with everyone
else. For shows like the IRev, ImportNights, etc. where do you guys park and how secure is the parking lot from theives? Is it not a good idea to bring your modded wrx there or is it ok? just wondering as i want to checkout those shows from time to time but dont want to risk any damage to my car.

i've never had any problems for those shows. (irev and hin, cuz i was parked inside. mwahaha.) but i've heard it's pretty decent. mostly because it's basically a car show out in the ramps as well. everyone who's going to these shows is going to have a modded car. and most likely... being car people... everyone is usually pretty cautious of how and where they park. it's probably one of the best chances of NOT getting a door ding in a ramp or lot. heh.

thanks for the info. do you pay the $21- $30 admission
at the parking lot entrance gate or inside? If at the entrance, then i would feel even better cause then less people who would want to f-kup our cars inside the lot. |

They're not unsafe, but I wouldn't bring a modded car there..
What people can't steal they can vandalize (e.g. "haters").
A car show is a perfect opportunity for thieves to operate as well. Be careful. Most items stolen from spectator vehicles include things like badges or at worse smash and grab interior or wheels/tires. Most common act of vandalisim? Ripped off wings, literally. [Well most common this side of keying or grafitti that is] Be careful out there. lateRZ |

FWIW, I wouldnt bring any obvisiously modded car to a show where you cant watch it. Too many opportunities for theft/vandalism. Rather just not deal it the risk.

The parking garage at the McCormick has been perfectly safe IMHO. The advantage of the show is that so many modded cars are in the lot that yours doesn't really stand out too much even if you've put a lot of work into making it nice

me and my friends never had any problems there. I seen alot of car crews park near the entrance to the parking lot, so i guess in case something happens someone will see it. You pay $12 to get into the lot. you pay the show admission inside. I think its safe.

How to get to high-thug potential events?
Quote:
A) A hooptie. A daily driver soo 00gly, that vandalism may be an improvement to its appearance in a weird ugly-is-art sort of way. B) A blandmobile. You know the generic box on wheels that does nothing but get you from point A to point B, but does not look like a hooptie. Popular cars for this category include stock Accords, stock Camrys, stock Maximas, etcetera ad nauseum. C) A sleeper. One of my good friends has a 450hp (to the wheels) GSX that looks like a GS (smaller 94-96 wing, 94-96 wheels), repelete with black FMIC and hidden guages, electronics. There are times I envy this friend immensely, there is definitely something to be said for ANTI-BLING. Barring that there is always a combination of public transport and taxis. The cost of parking and associated risks is always more than public transport + taxi fare. www.transitchicago.com www.metrarail.com lateRZ |

Case in point: a few kicks with steel toed shoes/boots, keymarks, slashed tires. No one is safe, merely lucky. Personal experience? One of my previous modified vehicles (back in 1996) had sustained damage from some sort of small caliber weapon while parked outside in Chinatown (I was at dinner). A year later, one of my friends had a small pipebomb thrown at his car, unfortunately it did hit its mark. We were in a restaurant on Peterson & Kimball and the car was parked outside.... Your mileage may vary, but hey that's what insurance is for right? *scratch head* I've never been able to figure out how insurance buys you back time lost though.... lateRZ |

I was a bit worried when I drove to IREV. I parked in the C lot and all my fears went away when I saw how everyone was parking and the number of really sweet modded cars. Everyone parked away from others and some double parked. A releif for me because I hate door dings! I honestly had no fear of something happening.

Un-safety in numbers.

Things may be different waaaaaay out in 630 (actually I've heard it can be worse in some respects) but in 312/773 there are many undesirable elements that PLAN their nefarious activities to coincide with shows. Thankfully most of us here drive Subarus so theft is less of an issue (although the advent of the WRX may have garnered the negative attention of these types as well). I remember when people would steal Fuba (ala VW style) whip attenaes and Type R badges or red "H" Honda badges. How about the straight up menaces who would roll around in Minivans with floorjacks, cinder blocks, and cordless impact wrenches. lateRZ |

thanks for the info, im starting to feel a little better...
Is Lot C the one in the north side? I need to take a good look at the McCormick map. and its good that they do in fact take some money at the parking gate. That alone eliminates some potential vandals. And yah, i hate dings myself. As far as parking in the streets....that's a different story. and yah...its unfortunate but it is all about luck. |

Looking at the map I don't know where they had us park now. But here's a map. For the people who have had there cars in the shows, have you had a problem with people leaning, accidentaly scratching, etc? I think it'd be awesome to sit around all day with a line of our Scubies at HIN. |
