Has anyone done this/does anyone know what is required? Ive read older threads on the procedure and parts but wondering if anyone has done it with the newer WRXs.

Look up the UTI campus at Norwood MA. They have a RWD 2002 WRX, your drivetrain minus the gear strength is no different. Or google RWD WRX. It has been done a few times.

Been done, over played, extremely expensive, no real need.

bbs.scoobynet.com/projects-40/820435-team-japspeed-2010-rwd-drift-subaru-wrx.html found from a quick google, try it some time.

this thread is on an 01 bugeye. my question was " if anyone has done it with the newer WRXs." thanks for your opinion. expensive isn't a factor. so i think i've found the part I need to order, http://www.rhdjapan.com/watanabe-ser...f-type-b-25041 but is this the actual type for a direct swap? hmmmm..

also, from what ive researched all i'd need to do would be order this part, swap out center diff, and take apart the front axles and leave the stubs in the knuckles and tranny, so basically just remove the bar.

regardless of what generation WRX it is the process is exactly the same and hasnt changed because like I said before your drivetrain minus the gears used in the transmission is EXACTLY THE SAME.

glad you found your answer. facts are not opinions btw.

i feel like you would just be better off selling tis car and getting the trade in value and buying a nice rwd.

its really not that expensive....

and all you saying the tranny is just as weak are WRONG. the RWD car can actually handle more abuse than the awd wrx because the wheels can break traction to minimize drivetrain shock (which is the killer of gears).

The white one?? That's RWD??
OK, story time.. During my tour of the school, we were talking about students studying dyno charts and whatnot. I ask "Is it a AWD dyno?" The instructor says "No its not." -So I look around the room and see a 350z and couple of other RWD cars, and then I see that WRX, and I ask "So how did you dyno that Subaru over there?" And he says.. "Oh they jack up the front and put the rear wheels on the dyno." I just say "That seems very unsafe...."
True story, the guys name was Larry Howarth. He called me everyday for about 3 months after that tour.
So that explains a lot..

An STi, but maybe he can give you some insight on what's involved. The guy seems to enjoy it and takes it to the track often. If it floats your boat, go for it!

because 240's are overplayed, 350s are an ugly excuse for a 2 seater coupe, and i could buy both of them today and still not have a RWD wrx.

THAT'S what i'm talkin about! But Jason isn't willing to share his procedures due to the amount of effort it took in research for him to make it possible.

that tour guide is a retard, talk to the education head/ former performance teacher Doug Nelson. his gc sti is on the forums here if you look. They did a RWD conversion and we put it on the dyno when i was there back in 2008-2009.

there was no lifting of the front end involved.

Actually no it can't. You are still putting the same amount of power through the trans. The fact that you can spin your rear tires doesn't mean anything. As a matter of fact being able to spin the wheels would probably speed up the process. Then you add on to the fact that now that you are rwd instead of half of your power going through the rear wheels you're doubling the output at each wheel in the back. Those axles and rears that generally aren't an issue will become a weak point. Can you get by with the weaker axles and rear? Sure but it depends on how you drive.

wow you guys......you know if he wants to do it, let 'em at it...sheesh. nobody ever said subies "have to" be awd. sure they've become that, but they don't have to be. converting to rwd maybe could be expensive, etc... sounds like a fun project and quite a bit more unique than some moron hellaflushing, or "ohhh hey look, short shifter blah blah blah". yeah, that's nice. But a rwd wrx would in fact be pretty cool. get over it.

What breaks the transmission is the drivetrain shock of a sudden burst of power. When the wheels are able to brake loose, there is far less shock on the driveline/diffs as the wheels spinning absorbs the majority of the impact.

While true that the weak point becomes the diffs on a rwd wrx - it is not the transmission. I know more than a few red wrx's and most of them are still on stock tranny, even after replacing the r160 a few times...

There are a lot more cars out there that fit what you want then 240's and 350's. Though you never specified if you wanted a 2 seater RWD car of 4 door. Because all you named were 2 seaters, but I digress.

If you do want to do this to your WRX, then do it. You obviously bought the WRX for a reason, if you want to waste money on it then it's your money. But I don't see this project going any further then this thread.

You're stating this like the tires breaking free isn't violent to begin with. Not to mention most people doing it are drifting their cars which puts more abuse through the diff and trans. I've seen plenty rwd as well and ones that are making a very good amount of power. I have also rebuilt my fair share of 5 speeds as well.
