Default cruise control light flash intermittently

On the first day I got my 05/STI about the 15th time I started it the Cruise control light on the HUD started flashing every two seconds. I tried to hit the cruise button to disable it, but it did nothing. I eventually got to my destination (5 min later) and just turned the car off. It hasn't happened since.

I spoke with service and they said it happened in the 04 and do not know why and how to fix it. Has this happened to anyone else and is there a fix?

Yes. But is associated with a check engine light. Somehow , on my 04 STI, a wire was severed going to a connector on the gas evaporative canister. This severed wired caused a check engine light which in turn disables the cruise control and causes it to blink. Because the foolish cruise control light is blinking it distracts one from noticing a check engine light. I would ask they pull the code and see if there was some event that caused a check engine light.

Wasn't sure that was clear enough. Events that trigger a check engine light on the STI will disable the cruise control.
(at least some will)

Thanks for the help. I haven't even tried to use the cruise yet, so I am going to test it later on today. My car is having the autobahn (invisible bra) fixed so while it is in I will have them check the car w/ the comp.

thanks again for the help.

Just checked the cruise adn it works fine. I am having them check it out this week. I'll let you know what they say.

ixusracing,

Did you ever resolve your CEL (Check Engine Light) with flashing Cruise conundrum?

I'm curious because it sounds so similar to what is going on with my car. Brand new (all stock) STi with about 350 miles on it (tach light is still set to come on a 3800 rpm) and BINGO, CEL comes on for no apparent reason.

Really sort of annoying. The only reason I bought a new car was because my husband told me he was tired of fixing my old car. (A 1983 Jetta. Yeah, nineteen EIGHTY three.) Guess which one I'm driving to work tomorrow?

Anyway, I don't mean to sound bitter... sorry... but I am very curious to know what happened with your car.

Also, if anyone out here can tell me WHERE to plug in an engine code reader (as opposed to simply typing out "take it to AutoZone!" one more time), I would really appreciate it. Been searching... can't seem to find a simple answer...

Thanks!
jane

It's under the steering column, knee bolsters, in recessed location near the middle.

AutoZone

Pakin,

Found it!

Thank you!!

Now I just need to figure out what to do about the P2097 error code... but that sure beats just watching the cruise light flash.

If your vehicle is still stock, and under 3/36, take it to the dealer. Your check engine light should be covered under warranty. And by the sounds of the code from the check engine light, you should have no problem

rexygirl,

Yep. If it goes off again, that's what I'll do. We already had a chat with the service manager.

I must say, it was a great comfort to find out what the error was that tripped the CEL. Its just being on was worrisome. Knowledge is power and all that.

Thanks!

Just for ther future:
In MOST instances, unless the CEL light is flashing on and off, there is usally nothing serious. If the light is flashing, do not drive the vehicle and have it towed.

I understand that as soon as you see the light come on it's panic time, but relax. The light could be coming on from anything from a loose gas cap to a bad cat convertor. And, unless the light is flashing or the car is running really crappy, you can usually make it home with out breaking down.
