Default ej253 strength?

does any one know how much hp and/or tq can a my08+ engine case take?
and does anyone know if a brian crower stroker kit for a ej257 will work on a ej253?

Not sure about the stroker kit (probably not) but I wouldn't assume it could handle nearly as much as 255/7 since its an open deck. Don't take my word though

is the ej255/257 a closed deck or semi-closed deck? cuz the pick of the ej257 short block on iag performance's website looks like its semi-closed.

EJ257 is a semi-closed deck block.

To the OP, that stroker kit is LARGE investment to use with a EJ253 block. You could buy a EJ257 for the price of that kit alone. YOu will have to over bore the cylinders and you will need to modify the heads to properly utilize the kit.

simple answer dont waste money doing this on a EJ253. If you want a higher CR play with HG thickness.

If one wants higher compression ratio, the simple, relatively inexpensive and reliable way is with the appropriate piston. Changing hg thickness also changes cam timing slightly and going thinner messes with piston/valve/head clearances.

i dont remeber asking about compression. im planing on using my stock cr of 10:1 and the stock 99.5mm bore. i just want a longer stroke. its a n/a build by the way

better head suds does the trick. People seem to forget that previous wrx's had open decks and boosted. A better than stock head gaskets and ARP head bolts sholud do the trick nicely in a N/A applicationg. Qhy not just get a bore over and have your block bored instead of buying this kit.
+.40 should do you nicely. Next is either get a repsected shop to build it or buy a built short block..best thing to do. overbores require retuning etc. and parts sometimes don't work well with new set up PITA if you ask me. what you can do is just purchase 100mm and have the mspec'd to that to limit down time instead of figuring where your cylinder maybe.

A N/A "build" that maintains the stock CR and stock bore while spending $3500 on a stroker kit?! You might want to rethink your plan.

+.40 what? Millimeters? So he can get custom 99.9mm pistons made instead of just using the commonly available 100mm ones? And how would that be a substitute for a stroker?

IIRC, you also have to have the block machined for the larger stroke, so the rod journals don't hit the inside of the block halves....

Lets just answer the OP's question.

1. 253's have been in boosted applications up around 400hp, but you aren't looking to make that type of power. It should be fine as your cylinder pressures aren't going to be as high as a heavily boosted motor.

2. The stroker kit would work, provided any case modifications were performed if they are needed for clearance.

3. A stoker kit designed for an EJ257 is going to need custom rods and/or pistons to work correctly. Stock pistons likely wont work based on pin heights.

The BC stroker kit includes pistons (with bore and CR determined by the buyer), which is why (IMO) sticking with the stock bore and CR seems silly.

Ahh....I see. I'm not familiar with the BC kits, and thought they were crank only deals.

OP can keep the stock bore for simplicity I guess.....

if i was going to bore it over i would do the 102mm bore with the sleeves but then i would have the cost of machine work and sleeves on top of the stroker kit. i looked at the gains of just boring it over and the gains of just stroking the engine and the additional stroke had the largest gains in displacement. i know $3500 is alot for maybe a gain of 20hp but some guys spend $1500 on exhaust and an intake and maybe see 5-10hp if there lucky. i think the stroker kit along with cams, custom exhaust(including header), modded stock intake, and tune could yeild a 50-60hp increase at peak and a 30-40hp increase across the power band. i was thinking of boosting after i built the engine or maybe a nitrous wet kit but i would rather keep it n/a cuz its my daily driver that i want to run 87 octane in since i already have a 720hp turbo ford lightning thats uses plenty of high octane already. im sorry for the poor grammer english was my worst subject in school.

You're going to put in a $3500 stroker kit, plus cams and headers, but want to stick with 87? That's... odd, considering the stock tune.

Based on this information, I think you would be a fool to spend the money. Wanna go fast? Grab the other set of keys.... Wanna carve some corners? Take the Impreza and work on the suspension. It's that simple.
